<!--QuoteBegin-Corporal Fortier+Apr 5 2005, 09:08 PM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Corporal Fortier @ Apr 5 2005, 09:08 PM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> Needless to say I enjoyed flying around in this new version! I'm nothing of a good JPer, but the high ceilings are really helpful! I always tend to hit myself in doorways and such, but I have little problems in this map!

First thing I had to do is checking out my favourite hive : Datacore! I was glad to see the RT's new position, I have yet to find disavantages with that! I also tried the "draining" weldable and everything seems ok there too! However I couldn't look how the water behaves in the room at the same time since I was still playing alone. Is there a triggered sound when the water goes down? It might be nice to get a pump or whatever!

I also played with the elevators. I find them a bit too quick to react after the switch has been activated. I think many marines will be left behind because they didn't have time to hop onto the platform. Perhaps add a 0.5 second delay after the switch is activated? The speed seems ok, but it could be lowered a bit without problem. The scientists who worked there must have been sick when going up and down that fast

Then I hopped in the command chair and I started dropping stuff pretty much everywhere. Being concerned by base defense, I tried to see if MS could be defended easily by static defense. This led me to finding a way to protect the CC, IP, Armory, Obs, Arms Labs and Proto Lab all with only one Electrified TFAC. Here are some screenshots :

    <a href='http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/CplFortier/Shiva_testing/MS_ElectTFAC_of_Death.jpg' target='_blank'>http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/Cpl...AC_of_Death.jpg</a>
    <a href='http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/CplFortier/Shiva_testing/MS_ElectTFAC_of_Death2.jpg' target='_blank'>http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/Cpl...C_of_Death2.jpg</a>
(btw tell me if the screens are too dark, I can try and boost them)

I tested the efficiency of this by going alien and I got hit by the TFAC in almost every position : sometimes even when being behind the Arms/Proto Lab. The CC is also unreachable by sneaky skulks. I dont know if this is much of an issue since I guess similar placements can be done in other maps, perhaps other testers can tell me what you think about that? I think inverting the RT and the CC could fix that : It'd make the CC more vulnerable, but I like the idea of the CC being incrusted in the wall like this though!

Then I tested if it was now possible to build on the ground of Coolant Exchange. Seeing it was now possible, I dropped a few TFAC and I found some sinking points. Here are some shots (I can't remember how I made the first one though... I wasn't fast enough on F5):

    <a href='http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/CplFortier/Shiva_testing/Coolant_Exchange_Sinking1.jpg' target='_blank'>http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/Cpl...ge_Sinking1.jpg</a>
    <a href='http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/CplFortier/Shiva_testing/Coolant_Exchange_Sinking2.jpg' target='_blank'>http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/Cpl...ge_Sinking2.jpg</a>

Then I moved on to Airlock to see if some bad comms could exploit the crates and such. I placed various phase gates on all the crates to see if they were hard to reach for skulks, but everything seems good! I found that it was possible to build a TFAC at the top of the crane, but it sank down afterwords :

    <a href='http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/CplFortier/Shiva_testing/airlock_sinking_into_crane.jpg' target='_blank'>http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/Cpl..._into_crane.jpg</a>

Finally, I ran around as a celerity skulk. Nothing much to comment yet, except that I accidentaly fell in the catwalk (is that the right word?) in Chemical Storage :

    <a href='http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/CplFortier/Shiva_testing/Chem_Storage1.jpg' target='_blank'>http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/Cpl...em_Storage1.jpg</a>

I don't know if this was intended since it makes it easier for people to pass behind those big pipes, but I thought I'd report it because I fell in it without meaning to so it may happen to other players that won't find it as interesting as me!

That's all I could do tonight! I'll fade/Onos around when I'll have some time and hopefuly I'll be able to help you a bit more! I would also like to meet up with some other people to test it out with multipple players! It would be nice if we could meet in a IRC channel or something, and when some people can play we can set up a home server!

I hope this was constructive feedback! Sorry for my inadequate English, I'm far from being perfect at writing even though I study languages <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
    Thanks a lot for the feedback. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> I'll look into the sinking issues.
The elevators are fast cause the last ones were too slow. I might add a tiny delay on them, but its possible to hit the switch for all of them while you are standing on the elevator.

The error you had with falling through that walkway was kinda intended. In the first version you couldn't get around the side of that pipe so I modified the clipping hull, but I think I overdid it.

Meeting in irc is a good idea. I'm pretty booked for the next few days, but I'd love to hear the results if you guys can get a game together <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I did a quick runthrough of the map and I've noticed a few things. I've skimmed the replies and didn't notice these specific things, but sorry in advance if they have.
<ul><li>In Datacore hive, the water is a smidge too deep for skulks to safely run through it. A marine will be able to easily kill a slower swimming skulk.</li><li>By Datacore, there's spots behind the grating that you can drop structures as commander but they will sink through. A nobuild back there would solve the problem I believe.</li><li>As you can see in the picture below, Data can be sieged from 2 hallways away. Add a pack of mines to that, and aliens stand <b>no</b> chance of recovering. A vent or two that lead out of the hive would solve that problem I'd imagine.
<a href='http://img227.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img227&image=shiva53be.jpg' target='_blank'><img src='http://img227.exs.cx/img227/5445/shiva53be.th.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /></a></li><li>The rt in Data appears to be nearly impossible to take down if they have the hive up. I know it should be hard, but it <i>shouldn't</i> be impossible. The way it's set up, you have to swim in the water up to a ladder that's directly under the hive, go up a ladder, jump across the pipes, and then have at it. It's a bit too much.
-</li><li>Coolant hive is siegable from 3 different locations that are nearly impossible for aliens to kill. The 3 screenshots below illustrate that. The only solution I can imagine for something like that is a re-work of the corridors or moving the hive further back.
    <a href='http://img34.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img34&image=shiva21bc.jpg' target='_blank'><img src='http://img34.exs.cx/img34/7360/shiva21bc.th.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /></a>
    <a href='http://img34.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img34&image=shiva61hm.jpg' target='_blank'><img src='http://img34.exs.cx/img34/6352/shiva61hm.th.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /></a>
    <a href='http://img34.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img34&image=shiva74yd.jpg' target='_blank'><img src='http://img34.exs.cx/img34/2931/shiva74yd.th.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /></a>
-</li><li>I don't know about other people, but falling down a 50 foot pit around a corner doesn't sound like fun to me. I noticed a few others have posted about them. Although they look cool, they don't really serve a purpose other than to annoy the hell out of marines from what I can tell. May I suggest just putting a glass texture or something over the hole so you can see down but can't fall down?
    <a href='http://img173.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img173&image=shiva12ol.jpg' target='_blank'><img src='http://img173.exs.cx/img173/5921/shiva12ol.th.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /></a></li></ul>
Siegable hives are always a good thing, but to be able to siege those hives from that far is just too much. Any good commander will take advantage of that on every round.

About the hole... There is a theoretical practicality to being able to shoot or even jump down it. I would suggests a railing, rather then a glass block.

    Hello to everyone,

I like the changes that moultano made to the Draft Shafts:
<!--QuoteBegin-Harmondo+Apr 6 2005, 06:19 AM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Harmondo @ Apr 6 2005, 06:19 AM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->[*]I don't know about other people, but falling down a 50 foot pit around a corner doesn't sound like fun to me.  I noticed a few others have posted about them.  Although they look cool, they don't really serve a purpose other than to annoy the hell out of marines from what I can tell.  May I suggest just putting a glass texture or something over the hole so  you can see down but can't fall down?

But you are right that it <u><i>can</i></u> be a pain in the **** to fall down there. I'm posting a picture of what I came up with <u>before</u> moultano released his ns_shiva<u><b>b3</b></u> version (I hope the picture speaks for itself):
    <img src='http://img95.exs.cx/img95/1484/draftshaftsskulkinsidems46in.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
It basically prevents you from falling down. I was also wondering if it could be possible to add a vent at the bottem, between the two draftshafts.

A good idea, indeed to balance the existing layout Swiftspear.

just let me throw in something:

anyone of you had the opportunity to play this map with more than two players?

after moultano gives out the next beta ... what about setting a fixed time where all those willing to test (at least those in the same time zone) join the server?

    i want to see a real game on this map! <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif' /><!--endemo-->

An instant gib would be cooler, just have railings. But its a good place for skulks to hide. Thats what I really like about the map, so many hiding spots to get into, alot that are vertical with multiple points. Makes it more omnimous and scary compary to the standard straight forward style of normal ns maps.

I really quite like the ladder system.

I plan on relocating to the bottom of the shafts as often as I can pull off >:D

Personally I really like the idea of fades and skulks leaping and blinking out of the pits. That's the main reason I'm not sealing them off. I thought about putting a railing there, but my worry was that it would constrain combat in that area too much. I already have a problem with hallways being too narrow (which I'm trying to fix.)

Rather than pming me, feel free to email my gmail account at
ryanmoulton at gmail period com. I have a hard time keepng my pm box clear enough to save stuff. I don't believe naigel has told me about the clipping bug yet.

This is a REALLY REALLY great map.

I've added your server to my favorites, but whenever I'm online, it's empty. I would really like to play this one. A fixed time for a game is a good idea. Unfortunately, I live in germany, we have a lag of something from 6 hours (East Coast) to 9 hours (West Coast). But feel free to contact me if there is an appointment <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Hi everyone,

I would like to point out that there is also a ns_shiva thread in the <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=73958&view=findpost&p=1123842' target='_blank'>mapping forum</a>, if you like this map (and in my opinion you should) you can allways post your feedback there too, and read the feedback the others have been giving.

If you haven't downloaded this map already, you are missing one of the best architectural maps ever made. So what are you waiting for, and see for yourself. And please post your feedback, as this map is worth it.

well, sad news folks. My comp is dead. Don't worry, i've got backups of the map source from at least the released version (probably later, I can't remember) and the hard disk is probably fine anyways, but this means that the testing server is down and I can't work on the map for a while.

    Here's a description of my issues. <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=91717' target='_blank'>http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index....showtopic=91717</a>

Just a note here, like I mentioned to you previously, you should really rename that wad file as you change it (ns_shivab3.wad), because I don't think it re-downloads a different size file if it already has one <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it did when I switched to shivab2a, but I don't think any textures were added, were they?

The file looks bigger now...so I feel I'll be missing textures or something if the file is not replaced by the server (which I don't think it does...)

Can you fix this? It would be the better way to do your map (leave ns_shiva.wad for the FINAL version)

    Can someone else verify this?

Beautiful, full of atmosphere, superb architcture and the vent system is the best i have seen in along time it actually reminds me of bast with all the out of the way places. I played b1 ages ago when there was a 2nd CC and that it was very cool then but now looks like you need to balance the play a bit and you have a winnar!!
