OMG scary game
Playing a level at the end of this game where you have to sneek round an abandoned building called the cradle that was a orphanage then a loonatic asylum. Not being funny but this has to be the scariest level of any game I have played! AvP2 is nothing compared to this, no horrer film ever made can even compare

Anyone else here played this?

I started it but never got far, dam work!

But i find games where you have limited supplies and have to be stealthier are scarrier because tis easier for thigns to go wrong.

Yeah, that level was pretty creepy, but it's not the creepiest i've played.

Something about the ghosts of little girls appearing and strange noises of things that arn't there; footsteps, whispers, screams and far off doors opening are just a wee bit unsettling.

Oh that and those scary mofo zombie mental patinents wandering round in straight jackets and cages on their heads!

No, but I was very scared when I played the last level of the first Thief, and the one with the undeads which were only killable with blessed water arrows... Imagine killing a horde of zombies with just 10 arrows. Impossible? Yes, it is... *cry*

I loved that level, especially the first half, before you meet the zombies. Until then, literally everything about the environment made my skin crawl, but once you had a tangible threat around, you began to be able to calculate risks, which took a lot of the edge away to me.
Still, the Cradle has to be one of the best cases of level design ever.

All the creepy noises in that level made me shudder, they also made it hard to make out the zombies approching, plus some of them had enormous patrol routes in that level as well so they often took several minutes to appear back where you first saw them.

If they made a resident evil FPS game that worked in the same was as this level it would be the most awsome game ever IMO.

Yes, it's a brilliant level. PC GAMER UK had a 10-page article dedicated to it last month; 'twas a lovely read.

The scariest game I ever played was Anachronox.

I got to the end boss, had everything prepped several saves made and even had a friend over who wanted to watch...

Then it crashed on me and corrupted all my saves and most of the game files. I couldn't sleep for a week.

The Cradle was awesome. And very scary. The scariest moment was when you walked into the second part, right before the zombies, and then saw one run across the room, just out of the corner of your eye in the shadows. And having to avoid the doctors in the Cradle's memories was pretty cool.

In fact, the whole idea of the Cradle's memory was cool. I mean, just as soon as you think you'll get out, and don't have to deal with this creepy level anymore, it won't let you leave.

Yeah you see it run past a doorway behind some counter!

Man that really freaked me out that bit, I though "ah **** what the hell was that?"

I never realised in that level tho that flashbombs were effective against the zombies all I used on them was holy water or just hid in corners.

I have 3 moderately scary expeirences:

The snake in Resident Evil (being the first actual 'horror' game I played, around 12 years old). I knew there was a snake in there, I just didn't want to get poisoned and then die (but then the snake looks really bad when you do go in there, so pffft).

The beginning of the marine's missions in AvP...decided I'd try out the predator first .

And the cradle. First time I've actually been scared for a second. I opened a door and a zombie is staring at me (hadn't had enemies in the level yet), so I drop a flashbomb and run around the corner. I come back because there's no moaning or scuffling or anything...no zombie. I figure now that it was just the light playing tricks on me .

Anyway, while it's not particularily scary, I loved the ghost ship and the cradle in that game (museum was pretty fun too).

Fool. Flashbombs work on EVERYTHING. They are the single greatest thief tool. Thats why I always have them as my selected item, especially when I'm wandering around the city streets and a guard notices me get... sloppy.

Speaking of gaurds, please tell me I'm not the only one to blackjack the guard in my appartment building, then steal from all my neighboors? Why would that guard even come back to work? And how could he not suspect Garret?

Edit: Yeah, the ghost ship was pretty scary. But it was more physical-scary, rather than psychological. Damn zombies...

Of course you're not the only one to blackjack the guard...

But are you really saying you only hit him once? What are you, crazy?

------------------
The zombie level was great. The one time that I get to blast things left and right as if the game was a true fps.

I knocked out the guard and stole from my neighbours as well lol

If you do it a few times the guard is no longer there a couple of days into the game, go look at his desk and there's a notice from the landlord telling him he's fired for being crap lol

It's just that back in Thief 2, I was the guy who'd obsessively toss the bodies of people I'd knocked out all into one spot in the river, after collecting them, so I could hear their collective grunts of pain. I called it my "collage".

So not beating a body after knocking it down is wasteful and a travesty to me.

btw I can't get thief 2 to work due to the NVIDIA drivers giving me a error.

If I roll back to 43.xx it works tho. Is there a way to get it to work on the current NVIDIA drivers?

I'm not sure dude, my bro's computer had the same damn problem though with Thief 2. I ended up playing it on my b0x even though I wanted to use his.

As for the fire, yeah, I used to pretend I was camping, and preparing my meal after a nice hunt.

Stealth games like Thief 3 always make me too jittery and uneasy to actually play through them, or even far into them, but probably the only game I've played to make my skin crawl and give me a general "ohgodletthisendsoonplease" was the Hotel in VTM: Bloodlines. Everything about that both made me love it and never want it to end, but also hate it and wanted it to end as soon as possible.

Yeah, seriously. I mean, its an orphanage AND an insane asylum. It has a morgue. It even has a little girl ghost. Little girl ghost just puts it over the top.
• TestamentTestament Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4037Members
Sounds like straight up scares over atmosphere. For some reason I prefer a wonderful set-up, atmosphere, and style more than actual scares. It ends up terrifying me more than anything else can.
• MantridMantrid Lockpick Join Date: 2003-12-07 Member: 24109Members
Are you referring to The Cradle, Testament? Because that place is bursting with atmosphere. And there is quite a bit of buildup. There aren't any physical enemies for the first half of the level, its all psychological effects.
• TestamentTestament Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4037Members
Hmm. Sounds like it's worth playing through Thief 3 for, then. I just get really jittery and jumpy when playing stealth games. Makes it unfun.
• MantridMantrid Lockpick Join Date: 2003-12-07 Member: 24109Members
Really? I like that feeling. I think it makes it more fun. And makes it longer, since you'll stop every ten minutes and say, "I'm going to go do something else, this is too creepy."

Yea, my small excerpt above wasn't even a real zombie. Having things you can actually kill is a lot less scary for me. I just freaked myself out by opening a door and thinking I saw something. Which is why it was so awesome.

...you can actually be pretty violent in Thief 3. If you steal a lot and then buy a lot of offensive weapons you can be a lot more rambo like. Just stock up on flashbombs so you can scare people and then stab them with the knife or knock them out. The cradle is actually half-way one of the easier levels, since zombies are easily destroyed (but not much you can do going back in time as one of the patients).

...now that it's been hyped up it wont be as scary either. On that note: System Shock 2 = not scary at all to me (still a decently fun game).
