Recommendations?
I'm making use of my old CS linux server. Its a P3 700 with 384MB ram. max upload speed on my line is 768kbps. any maxplayer recommendations?
With a 1Ghz with 256Mb RAM running 12 player my server lags very badly on some maps but not others. ns_hera and ns_bast are two that seem to kill it the most. Just my observations.
whats the actual CPU reqs on a DS though? I had 18 people on my server... but I didn't get on to see how much other people were complaining... now theres no one, mainly because school and work is still in effect which always drags down the user count on my server...
It was a constant 18 people yesterday, its not like they all lagged and left (as far as i know)... Now its at 1.01 and I guess we shall see...
I'm using my old **obscenity** DS that was sitting there doing nothing... NT 4 SP6 400 mHZ p2 384 meg ram Fractional DS-3 & Full T-1 (around 8 meg total with load balancing)
I could use my newly restored dual 900 p3, but... i was gonna see if I could get by on this POS first...

The specs for internet servers and lan servers are quite different; I have a linux lan server running here behind my school's firewall that's a P2-400, with 192mb of ram and a gigantic swap file (read:2.5gb). It performs quite nicely with a player load of up to 20 people. Internet servers seem to need 700mhz/256mb at least to run decently, and that's just with linux. I wonder what the realistic specs for a resource-sucker(Win32) server are?
[off-topic]wow, so many new people... [/off-topic]
400mhz runs a 20 player server ok? I'd have to see it to beleive it.
Ok... seems like 17/18 people kills the server... but i think 16 works fine... again... 400 mhz comp im showing about 90-98% usage, which isn't a problem since the comp isn't needed for anything else
I can run an 18 person server for 10 min before it all goes to hell in a hand basket... and a 16 person for 15/20 min... setting the timelimit down doesn't help because there are times when a game can DRAG ON forever... especially when theres lag
at 14 people my server runs fine... a tad laggy, but playable
when they completely fix the code one should be able to run a 16 person server on a 400 mhz p2... it has the ability, its just the junk that sticks around clogs its **obscenity** up...
btw... im doing a test for my dual 900... i put an 18 person server running on the second processor, gonna see how that works... but its empty... 66.187.1.56:27016 someone wanna get a stress test going and report back to this thread or e-mail me? (redjacket@death-web.com)

Even LAN/internet games don't use DNS anyway. U only use DNS once anyhow. HL never uses DNS anyhow. It runs on straight Level 4 of the OSI (although i maybe wrong about that). It only deals with IPs. And even if it did use DNS, it wouldn't only resolve the name once and use the IP from there so i don't see what DNS has to do with anything anyway!
IPX is a lame protocol, it doesn't run near as well as TCP does. That server i was running was an internet server. And it couldn't take the CPU hits. PII 400Mhz.

what does that have to do with anything? it anything, it shouldn't have lagged out on a LAN game. Linux has the lowest overhead and better resource managment. Thats why they released a linux server version of HLDS and the mods are coming with both win32 and linux ports.

I have two servers:
1. AMD 2000 XP+ (1.67GHz) with 512mb memory with 18 player server and takes 80-90% CPU without ping and lag problems 2. AMD 2600 XP+ with 512mb memory with 18 player server. This moment under maintenance. I doing some optimize for server. I belive I running 18 player server with it. Not sure was processor 2600 or 2700. Something like 2GHz.
I would like see this 400Mhz cpu with 16 or even 18 player server..

its an 18 person server with 17/18 people on it... but I can't actually see the console text to see if anyone is complaining...
does anything actually show up in the console or is GHost just being retarded?
