Hey guys,
I know there have been threads on this before. I am a bit confused with the install of this, i complied the amxx file and placed it in plugins folder, listed it in plugins.ini bla bla bla, basic stuff. I placed the cfg file in the cfg folder, but where do the .tga files go? I placed them in ns/gfx/env with the other tga files, but im not positive if this is correct. Could somebody tell me where the correct location for them is? Also, do you need to create a .res file for have the client download the files? I am bringing this up because i ran my server, joined a team, and I still had no icon. I assumed the problem was that i didnt place the .tga files in the correct place and therefore either wasnt able to download them or the server wasn't able to access them. Do you need to have clients download the .tga files if they are not custom? I ran an amxx_plugins in the server console, the plugin is running. Im just trying to do a process of elimination here, Thanks for your help guys. I just read the modns file on it, I am still wondering about the .tga files but could somebody explain the "Also verify that for specific icons, you provided a color string! This is mandatory for all icons except the following: :op:, :redop:, :blueop:, :yellowop:, :default:" <- where does this go. Because, in the .conf the author has his as STEAM_0:1:3076 pirate999 but no :op: or whatever after it. I think the modns instructions are a bit confusing for me at least. If anybody could clear this up and maybe show me an example of theirs that would be great. I have gone to websites where they are demonstrating how to make custom icons but not where to place them or anything. Thanks guys

The plugin automatically precaches them you don't need to make a .res file. Your problem seems to be placing the icons in the wrong directory, it should be ns/gfx/vgui

    pirate999 = pirateRGB

The 3 numbers are the Red Green Blue(RGB) value.

Hey thanks for getting back to me quickly. I just modified my post because I just remembered the 999 was a color value, sorry about that one. Not my first or last brainfart tonight. Ill try what you said, thanks for the correct place to put the .tga files, ill give it a try and see if thats the only thing i screwed up

I am still having issues with it, I have them in the correct folder, did all along, so I guess I need help with the icons.conf. It is placed in my addons\amxmodx\configs folder. I put my steam ID below the example one, did everything the same, the pirate 999, and nothing came up at all. Like I said, the script is running when i do amxx_plugins, no errors loading, the .tga files are in the gfx/vgui/ folder. I don't know what is wrong. All I can assume is that something in the conf is wrong, can anybody give me an exact example of theirs or any help at all would be appreciated, thnx.

    <span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'>PIRATE999</span>

notice the lack of a space.
  • SphynxSphynx Join Date: 2005-03-12 Member: 44995Members
I would like to say that the lack of a space was the problem....but I believe i said that i copyed it exactly from above, hence the lack of a space, so no, that wasnt the problem there is no space in there. THANKS for being observant, ill be more careful

your conf file should look like this.......

    steam_0:1:123456 pirate999

    follow these troubleshooting steps first..........

    1. make sure you have the right steam id
    2. change the map (map needs to change in order to register the new id)

if that don't work, then try this. replace the pirate icon with something new. make sure you don't have it on your comp. now change the map and enter the server. if you dont see anything downloading, it means you messed up somewhere. tell me what happens after this.

Okay, Here is what i have tried thus far
I double and triple checked my Steamid, it's correct, so is the pirate999 in there, everything is the way you had it. I joined the server, and changed the map, still didn'ts show up. When i was trying this earlier every time i made a change i restarted the server so i think it would have worked like that, but I tried both ways none the less. Then I tried changing the icon to something different, still didnt work even after changing maps. Then what i did was took all the .tga files i have on the computer i use for playing NS and put them in a different folder. I joined my server and it downloaded the .tga files, so I know this much works. I have no idea what the issue is, the plugin is running, the .tga files are in the right place for the server, the format of the .conf file is correct. Any more suggestions? Thanks for your help

in your server.cfg, do you have mp_uplink set to 0?
  • SphynxSphynx Join Date: 2005-03-12 Member: 44995Members

mp_uplink is set to 1, I think that's what it's supposed to be set on, isn't it?
Now that I look at it, the thing above it states to list SteamIds so that people get icons, I am guessing that because this is blank, it might be the problem?

Alright well i updated the thing I was talking about, where it specificed OPS, I put my steamid in there, and i started up the server, joined it, changed maps, all that jazz, still doesnt work, Do you need to have other players there as well? I would assumed everybody is running out of suggestions, lol. Just to recap, I am using icons.axx by sawce and it's version 2.1 if this helps. I have edited the conf file located in amxmodx\configs folder to include my Steam id with pirate999 after it. I have placed the .tga files in the vgui folder in gfx, I have edited server.cfg and made sure that mp_uplink is 1 as well as mp_serverops includes just my steamid, I must be missing something else, thanks for your help

try the metamod version. you have nothing to lose anyways.

I think i was getting the other version to work, but there was a problem. Once I placed my steamid in the server.cfg file under where you list ops, everytime i joined the computer i was joining on froze. THe server didn't freeze at all. This leads me to believe that whatever I did it was working in some shape or form.

I also tried disabling all the other 3rd party plugins i have except the icons one. I also turned on most every module as well, nothing has worked. I feel like I have tried everything. Is there some other file other than server.cfg and the .conf one i need to modify? Also I have it so I am automatically an admin when I connect to my server, I dont need to log in, Im not sure if this is a problem because i was reading a thread (on modns.org) and somebody was talking about turing authentication off or something of that sort, I was wondering if maybe it didnt allow for you to have an icon unless you signed in as admin unless you changed the script, im not sure if that was what that person was talking about

    I don't see how you're having a problem...everything seems setup.

I assume you are running amxx v1.0 or 1.0.1(whatever that last update was).
Also, make sure if you don't have the latest amxx that you get the latest NS module that was released when NS 3.0 Final came out.

I assume you downloaded the base amxx v1.0+ AND the NS files that go with this so that you have nscommands, idlekicker, and some other NS specific plugins default with amxx.

You need that NS module that comes with the NS package of amxx. Be sure you have this. And don't go to the metamod version as this one is probably better.

Be sure you have all this before going forward... Easiest way to tell is to see if you have the nscommands or idlekicker plugin running!

Edit: Also make sure you have sv_allowdownload/sv_allowupload set to enabled so that custom stuff works like custom sprays, icons, etc.

Edit: And take your steam ID's out of the serverop area in the server.cfg. You will not use this area! I can see why it's crashing if it is trying to set 2 icons to the same person...
  • SphynxSphynx Join Date: 2005-03-12 Member: 44995Members
Yeah, I do have the latest version of amxx, i have idlekicker etc in there. In a way i guess it was good that i put my steamid in the server.cfg because it at least did something to show that something was working, lol. I commented it out a while ago because i was trying to trace the problem. I had mp_uplink 1 in my server.cfg, sv_allowdownload 1, but sv_allowupload wasn't in there so i threw it in there as 1. I dont know if this will work, but it's worth a try. If this doesnt work I'm going to be mad. I think i might have posted this previously but does it matter that I dont need to log into amx, i just become an admin on connect because i have it to recognize my steamid. I was reading a thread about authentication for the icons.amxx on the modns forums and I was wondering if that was an issue. Maybe I will try making it so i need to log in and then try a diferent map or something. Thanks for your help guys, I hope I get it working soon. Any more suggestions will be greatly appreciated, looks like every trick in the book needs to be pulled out to get this thing to run.

Sum plugin need serverop access in server.cfg (for example : readyroomblocker from metamod.)
I had run both with the icon(serverop & admin icon). I have no conflict or crashed on that issue. did u put ur custom icon in \ns\gfx\vgui\ ? & put ur steam id in that icon.conf? ns 3.0 has no that 2 dirs \gfx\vgui . U have to make it urself.

This issue could be resolved much quicker by doing 3 things:<ul><li>Read <a href='http://www.modns.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=168' target='_blank'>the Admin Icons thread</a> on the modNS.org Forums thoroughly. Then re-read it.</li><li>Follow the instructions given and to start with use <b>ONLY</b> the icons provided.</li><li>Post any issues with the plugin in that thread.</li></ul>Steve D's thread is very well written, and many people have already been helped there.

    1. I have already read and re-read the forum thoroughly, i believe I stated this that I had refered to it SEVERAL times, thus where I got the thread about the guy and taking out the authentication.
    2. I am not using custom icons, the icons that came default with it are placed in C:\Hlserver\ns\gfx\vgui where I was told to place them
    3. I saw serveral posts here about the Server OP icon and many people were helped and I assumed mine would be a simple fix

The point is the viewer-base of the forums you downloaded the plugin from is better qualified to help with this problem. That is specifically why those fora were created. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

So much effort has been put into it here now that it's worth it to just try to fix it...

Ok, my suggestion...if you don't have anything significantly changed in your NS Hlserver install, redo everything. I mean, if you only installed AdminIcons as the first custom plugin, and that's it, just start a fresh install of everything following ALL the readme's exactly. If you don't want to do that, start posting all your information...this is really messed up. This is supposed to be a straightforward install of a simple plugin, but there is something fishy here.

Post your server.cfg, amxx.cfg, plugins.ini, modules.ini, "metamod" plugins.ini, icons.conf, list of running amxx plugins in HLDS, and where each of the files is located (ex. icons.conf is in addons\amxmodx\configs). It will be a lot of stuff, but it might help us track something down in regards to errors in your config files!

*sigh* You're way out in left field Boris <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> . No one thus far has suggested the obvious so let me tell you all the easiest way to determine exactly where the problem is:<ul><li>Forget the server for a moment and go into your client's ns/gfx/vgui folder and see if the icon you've designated is in there - my guess is it's not.</li><li>Now we have to determine WHY the icon you've assigned to yourself is not there.</li><li>Back to your server.cfg: make sure sv_allowdownload is set at 1. This ensures your client (or anyone elses) can download the icons that are precached by the plugin.</li><li>If you use sv_downloadurl make sure all paths are correct on your webserver, and that the icon files reside in it's ns/gfx/vgui directory.</li></ul>If by chance all of the above is set up correctly and you <b>STILL</b> can't view the icon ingame, be sure to get the error message from the client's console when you connect - it should tell the story.

I don't really see how this is out in left field but...I just want him to post any configuration and any errors he gets. The more info we get, the better chance we spot something silly like a spelling mistake.

I've never seen so much trouble with such a straight forward plugin...I wonder if it could be just the new ns module. Was there any change in this to do with displaying the scoreboard?

I can understand Sphynx's frustration in trying to get this plugin going, and it seems he's going around in circles with what everyone's suggested thus far. That's why we need to know first whether his client is downloading the precached icons, and work backwards from there. Your method isn't incorrect Boris, it's just a lot of (perhaps unnecessary) extra work. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

There have been many problems associated with upgrading AMX Mod X to v1.01. To quote the AMX Mod X team <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->We've cleaned up a few things, but for the most part it's not vitally necessary that you upgrade.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->However, it is imperative you update the ns module so grab the v1.01 NS Package and install it (a couple of the plugins have been updated too). Lastly it's suggested you use Metamod v1.17.4 and not the "p" version.

I believe i posted this a while ago. What I did was move all of my client files in the vgui folder out, that way I could see if I downloaded them from the server. I did, and I used the default icons that they gave me on the install. I have joined quite a few ns servers so I pretty much have all the regular ones and many custom ones. I don't think that's the problem. I need to go soon but I will list the plugins I have running. I have no errors in my Server console, I am going to check my client console. Before i dont think there were errors but i thought i saw one last night, maybe i triggered something. Plugins running are:
    icon.amxx
    gnome.amxx
    extralevels2.amxx
    latejoin.amxx
    hiveccstatus.amxx

^ these are all the 3rd party plugins
Modules I have commented out and are running are:
    fun_amxx.dll
    engine_amxx.dll
    fakemeta_amxx.dll
    array_amxx.dll
    sockets_amxx.dll
    regex_amxx.dll
    ns_amxx.dll

I relize some of these might not be needed but i enabled most of them just to make sure the plugin was not missing a module to work properly. I tried it with just engine, fun, and ns_amxx but i dont think it worked then either. I need to go now, perhaps this will help a bit. thnx for your help.

Let's hope you copy / pasted your plugins.ini because you have a typo:
    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--><b>icons</b>.amxx  ;displays icons for players via icon.conf in ns folder<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Also, disable the array, sockets, and regex modules as I'm fairly certain you aren't using them.

Yeah, in reading back through one of your replies I see where you moved the tga files on the computer you play from ... my bad. Guess I was looking for the keyword "client". <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Good to see somebody else is having my problem, Yes that was a typo on my part it IS icons.amxx in the plugins.ini, my b, I was tying qickly. I also disabled those other modules, like I said i wasnt exactly sure what modules icons.amxx required so I enabled most all of them
