First, list your specs, OS, and any programs you normally run that you think might be of cause. Next, describe the scenario-is this during start up or when you start a specific application? Have you installed any new hardware or software? Do you run a virus protector or spyware software?
Details, details, details <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
If that doesn't help, what did to make this start happening or was it random? Did you just boot up one day and find this problem?
All signs point to lots of junk trying to run at the same time. Is it at all possible to run your spyware removal programs? Is your Norton kept up to date? If not, can you get your compy to access <a href='http://housecall.trendmicro.com/' target='_blank'>Trend Micro's free online virus scan?</a>
say if somethin's running at background
we can test this by:
start->run->type in "msconfig"->go to the startup tab->unclick everything->apply changes->reboot your computer
if it runs a lil more smoothly, one of the reason for your condition might be stuff's running in background, now it might be anything, i suggest you scan your computer with more than one spy ware removal software, Ad-Aware, SpyBot are good choices
run defrag if its too fragged
uninstall things if its doesnt hve enough space
one best way to do it is reformat, backup ur stuff first ofcourse
or theres a skulk living in your tower <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Oh, and the free online scan is IE only. I use firefox.
This is normal. Just select "start in Safe mode without network capability" and then let it boot. You'll get a message telling you you're in safe mode. Just select "continue" or "ok" or whatever.
Once in safe mode, do the following:
Run Spybot and any other spyware removal programs
Try running a Norton virus check (I don't use this so I'm not sure if it will run this way)
Run disk cleanup
Run defrag
*this process could take as much as a couple hours so fire up the coffee and get comfy*
Restart windows without going to safe mode (if you don't do anything it will boot normally) and see if the problem persists.
Also, do you regularly (more than once a month) check for updates for your spyware removal programs and do you have an ongoing account with norton to receive virus updates?
It's ok if you aren't familiar with this stuff, just be sure to work methodically and don't ge ahead of yourself. We'll help you sort it out <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Just to clarify: you want to start pressing F8 when the machine starts. Continue pressing until the menu comes up.
Also, even after you get it running smooth again, it's a good idea to do your maintenance in safe mode. Not only will it take less time, you might also pick up some nastiness you wouldn't get running a normal boot.
Good luck.
