hey, I'm having trouble with my compy: explorer is taking up 80-99% of my CPU, and my desktop won't come up. I can't open any programs without using the task manager- obviously, I have no start bar. help?

While this isn't the best place for this kind of post, I'll help until a mod gets here.

First, list your specs, OS, and any programs you normally run that you think might be of cause. Next, describe the scenario-is this during start up or when you start a specific application? Have you installed any new hardware or software? Do you run a virus protector or spyware software?

Details, details, details

I am unable to access my specs- however, I am running windows XP. This happens on start up, and I have installed no new programs, except for NS 3.0, which wouldn't cause this. I run ad aware SE and spybot- Search and Destroy. Those, and Norton for anti-virus.

Can you boot to Safe mode? How long have you had this machine and has it ever given you trouble before? Do you perform regular maintenance (defrag, diskcleanup, windows update, etc)?

no, I can't boot it to safe mode. I have had this computer for aproximately three years. It has never given me trouble of this nature before. Yes, I perform regular maintenance on it. (sorry if I sound ungrateful, I'm not trying to be.)

If you've done a recent Spybot scan I'd recommend opening it up and rolling back the last scan. I've had the same problem twice now. It's deleted Spyware that was sitting in a file needed by Windows (or something like that anyway).

If that doesn't help, what did to make this start happening or was it random? Did you just boot up one day and find this problem?

Just to be clear: when you boot, your compy will POST and start Windows but when the background shows up it freezes? I'm curious how you can access task manager but not enter Safe mode?

All signs point to lots of junk trying to run at the same time. Is it at all possible to run your spyware removal programs? Is your Norton kept up to date? If not, can you get your compy to access Trend Micro's free online virus scan?

Yeah, a little clarification on why you can't boot to safe mode would help. What happens when you try to boot to safe mode? Since you can access task manager, you're obviously far beyond the point where you select your boot options, so it should at least be possible to ATTEMPT to boot to safe mode. What exactly goes wrong?

sounds like stuff you dont know's running at the background, or that the disk's pretty fragged, or your harddrive's too cluttered windows down not have the memory space required to run smoothly

say if somethin's running at background
we can test this by:
start->run->type in "msconfig"->go to the startup tab->unclick everything->apply changes->reboot your computer
if it runs a lil more smoothly, one of the reason for your condition might be stuff's running in background, now it might be anything, i suggest you scan your computer with more than one spy ware removal software, Ad-Aware, SpyBot are good choices

run defrag if its too fragged

uninstall things if its doesnt hve enough space

one best way to do it is reformat, backup ur stuff first ofcourse

The only problem I'm having with booting to safe mode is that every time I've had to boot to safe mode, a numbered list of boot-up options has been presented to me. To Everwatchful, I don't get the start button. And yes, when the background shows up, everything stops. I'm sorry I'm not as knowledgeable about computers as I would like to be, but this has never happened before.

Oh, and the free online scan is IE only. I use firefox.

This is normal. Just select "start in Safe mode without network capability" and then let it boot. You'll get a message telling you you're in safe mode. Just select "continue" or "ok" or whatever.

Once in safe mode, do the following:

Run Spybot and any other spyware removal programs
Try running a Norton virus check (I don't use this so I'm not sure if it will run this way)
Run disk cleanup
Run defrag

*this process could take as much as a couple hours so fire up the coffee and get comfy*

Restart windows without going to safe mode (if you don't do anything it will boot normally) and see if the problem persists.

Also, do you regularly (more than once a month) check for updates for your spyware removal programs and do you have an ongoing account with norton to receive virus updates?

It's ok if you aren't familiar with this stuff, just be sure to work methodically and don't ge ahead of yourself. We'll help you sort it out

thanks. The problem is that the list isn't coming up now- I tried doing a full boot as opposed to a quick boot and that got my desktop and start bar back. However, it's still running slower than molasses in Antarctica, so I'll try those things. Thanks a lot, guys ^_^

Just to clarify: you want to start pressing F8 when the machine starts. Continue pressing until the menu comes up.

Also, even after you get it running smooth again, it's a good idea to do your maintenance in safe mode. Not only will it take less time, you might also pick up some nastiness you wouldn't get running a normal boot.

Good luck.
