.ztmp Files: What Are They?

sv_downloadurl enabled
Part of my regular server maintenance includes deleting ".ztmp" files. No one has been able to explain to me why these files exist IF you have sv_downloadurl enabled, and ALL custom files are NOT downloaded from the gameserver.

Yes these were used before redirect was implemented and afaik no longer needed.

I would assume they get auto created when the user asks for them before they are sent via redirect.

You could always try making your maps folder read only yet this may cause further problems.

They dont really bother me tho as long as u have plenty of hdd space shouldnt be a problem.

Also its concevable that ur redirect goes down sometimes and so the server falls back to the old method

They certainly aren't harming anything, they just serve no purpose so I don't see the need for 125+ of them hanging around.

I would have to make a lot more than the "maps" directory read only, but that may be worth a shot. But you're right, if I lose my redirect connection it would revert to the gameserver, then I'd be up the creek without a paddle.

I guess I was hoping there there was a way to disable the creation of these ztmp files.

When a Steam client downloads a resource from a Steam game server (like a .BSD map), the resource is first compressed to save bandwidth. An associated .ZTMP file is stored on the server so the resource won't need to be compressed again the next time a client requests it. If you change the resource you need to delete the associated .ZTMP file so that the next person who downloads is doesn't get the old copy instead of the changed resource file (Steam does not detect changed game resource files and recreate the .ZTMP file automatically.)

This all makes good sense IF the client is downloading the file form the gameserver. With sv_downloadurl enabled however, the client should be downloading directly from the wbeserver, NOT the gameserver. That being said, I don't undertand the need for the compressed file on the gameserver.

Or is this just an unavoidable by-product?
