The jokes are too obvious, it's blowing my mind...

To be serious, what are you talking about? Most measurements in half-life are in pixels or feet (as represented in the engine), as far as I understand..

He means, e.g. a skulk runs at 290units per second afaik (base speed) what does this relate to?

In the changelong it says that the shotgun has a range of 500 units and has no damage after 700 units. WTH is a unit? See if i knew how long a unit was, then i could figure out how far a shotgun could fire. That is the purpose of this question.

The best way to figure out how far you can effectively use a weapon...is to use it and find out. Try firing the shotgun earlier than you normally would to see if it will kill them. Heck, get a freind to help you out and stand at a distance while you move progressivly closer till you get the most effective range.

Distance is only relativemy friend, and especially when your playing a game, even if someone tells you how far, it may not help. The best way I've found to figure it all out is to shoot at them until they die.

Failing that, get the SDK, load up you favourite NS map (a copy of it), and draw a line persactly 500 units long, line it up against the map, and that'll tell you the range.

Skulks can close the maximum range of the shotgun in around 2.5 seconds, try a full speed run with the skulk, and time yourself. Stop at exactly 2.5 seconds, turn around, and marvel as to how long 700 units actually is. It's quite a distance, longer than you think...

marine height is 72 units if Im not wrong... That can be used to compare...

EDIT: If you need to measure map distances; you can use obs' passive radius, which is 900 units. You can see it green highlighted in comm view when obs is selected...

Units is a matter of reference. If you have the gnome plugin installed, change this define setting
    <!--c1--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->#define gnome_range   4000.0<!--c2--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--ec2-->
To 500, then (on an ns map) see how far the gnome can get fron the cc before he's blocked from going further. That would be 500 units. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Units are the basic unit of measurement in the Hammer editor.

Here's a handy little picture that I took out of Hammer and slapped some measurements on.

In which case, if the comm chair is 85 units from end to end, shotguns have got around 8 times the length of the chair for their top range. As it says in the manual, they've really killed the sniper shotgun effect. Which I think is wrong.

Have a wider spread, instead of a range. A real shotgun doesn't just bounce pellets off your target if they're more than 20 feet away. Yes, you'll get peppered with pellets, but you'll get hit less, rather than not at all. That would have been a better limit on the shotgun.

Nerfing it from a sniper weapon to an assault weapon is still a good thing though. Sniper shotguns are annoying in CS, to say the least.

IIRC, those cargo boxes you see all the time in NS, are 64x64x64.

I'll do some testing and make a post about it later.
  • xtcmenxtcmen Join Date: 2004-04-20 Member: 28040Members, Squad Five Blue
I started testing the range. It stops doing damage about 3/4 of the length of cargo.

a unit is an arbitrary mesuring distance used by the hammer editor. I don't know if you have it in there already nite, but it would be really nice, expecially for new mappers, if you could include a playerhull dimentions chart for all the playable lifeforms in standing and ducking and the same for all the structure hulls of the structers in NS, in the NS manual, hidden away somewhere.

This is about 500 units. This is where the shotgun shells start to hit. Devide this by 5 and you can see 100 units, a little longer than the marines height. I guess a unit is about an inch, because 72 / 12 = 6', which is about the average height for a male. So whenever you hear of a unit, think inch. (so, a shotgun would have a 41.6 ft distance. It may not look like it from this screenshot, however, do to the default FOV.)

Well I did some testing. I really dont understand it. The damage didn't really go down per pellet. I would move 50 units up and down, and still get 8/66 hp. That is the least damage i could create with teh shotgun. After a certain point, the shotgun never hits.

They become null after 500 units.
  • DarknsDarkns Join Date: 2004-09-05 Member: 31402Members, Constellation
Units were originally supposed to be inches...

In the manuel it says that the damage is reduced after 500 units by .5 percent per unit making it useless after 700. If it gets nulled after 500 then my hp should of been 17 points instead of 10. There must be something buggy about it.

Actually, no. 1024x768, no AA, no anistrophic. On thing I could suggject is maxing out gamma and putting brightness high.... and using cl_texturemode gl_linear_mipmap_linear, setting fps_max at 100... etc. etc. ... I rather have a crappy picture and high fps than vise versa, but NS just is sexy at most sys specs.
