I thought the colorfulness was the tracer rounds? Hence why you see a solid line of dust but only 5 or so shots going at it.

Did anyone else almost make a mess of his pants at the thought of mounting the gun on that beetle or should I take myself to a psychiatrist?

gah...read my post ...here again for you both

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The gun fires a mix of both "PGU-13/B HEI High Explosive Incendiary" and "PGU-14/B API Armor Piercing Incendiary" ammunition, manufactured by 2 different companys ; Honeywell and Aerojet.
The Honeywell manufactured API ammo is a little bit faster (1030 m/s) than Aerojet´s API (980 m/s) .

    Muzzle velocity
    980 m/s API (Aerojet)
    1030 m/s API (Honeywell)
    983 m/s API-PGU-14/B
    1021 m/s HEI-PGU-13/B
    1036 m/s TP PGU-15/B

The PGU-13/B HEI High Explosive Incendiary round employs a standard M505 fuze and explosive mixture with a body of naturally fragmenting material that is effective against lighter vehicle and material targets.

The PGU-14/B API Armor Piercing Incendiary round has a lightweight body which contains a sub-calibre high density penetrator of Depleted Uranium (DU). In addition to its penetrating capability DU is a natural pyrophoric material which enhances the incendiary effects.

The PGU-15/B TP Target Practice projectile simulates the exterior ballistics and provides a ballistic match to the HEI round and is used for pilot training.
A typical combat load for the GAU-8 would include 1,100 rounds of 30mm high explosive or armor piercing ammunition.

The ammo is stored in an 1,85m long cylindrical shaped helical magazine, that is able to hold 1174 rounds, and is positioned at the end of the weapon system. The ammo itself is fed linkless, spent cases are getting transfered back into the magazine,to avoid damage on the plane.

The 30mm API is mixed with 30mm High Explosive Incendiary (HEI) at the factory and is called Combat Mix Ammunition. The ratio of API to HEI rounds in the Combat Mix is 4:1. Combat mix is a sequential mixture of DU and HEI rounds in which 1
HEI round followed by 5 DU rounds are fired by the AN/GAU-8 gatling gun, followed by one HEI round. DU is the primary munition for the A/OA-10 in a combat environment.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I don't know why they bother equipping the A-10 with bombs at all. Not when you ave a cannon that can fire 4200 RPM of Depleted uranium rounds at a target. It would take less time to destroy an M1A1 with the gun, too.

Pffft, in the movie Predator Jesse Ventura had trouble using his electric powered 'handheld' minigun, and it didn't even fire real projectiles <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->. Plus, when they first got it on set it didn't work and their weapons specialist disassembled it into...very many parts (...where it was missing a ring for one of the barrels or something). There's a reason they're mounted on vehicles. Heck, even the video of the 'airsoft' minigun demolished a television <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> . They are awesome.

On an off topic note: the eyes in the bottom of Sheena's sig do what my eyes do all the time. That is: My left eye enjoys floating off and staring at something different than my right all the time (generally it goes to the left, not the right, though).

Only a myth, only a myth. As I said, that's only about 55% of military thrust. ONE of the A-10's engines can output almost the same power, and the plane can fly with only one engine. Combine this with the A-10's very low stall speed, and you won't get it slowed down enough to stall as long as both engines are running on full thrust and operating flawlessly.

    good to know...
i sue the writer of this book...
ive heard the a10 is still able to fly with less than 50% remaining wingspan, thats very impressive for a plane...

Another clever thing about the A-10's design is the engine placement - from the ground, they're obscured by the rest of the aircraft. That makes them waaay harder to hit, and I think it also reduces the IR signature.

Of course, the whole aircraft is optimised to do one thing and one thing only - destroying tanks.

Oh, and the business about the GAU-8 slowing the aircraft to a stall is cowdung, although it certainly slows it. From an aircraft magazine I have:

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->"You ripple off a hundred-round burst, you feel the aircraft just shudder. There's about 12,000 lb of torque there; you rip off a good second/second and a half burst of that 30-mm, it'll take a good 5kt off your airspeed"<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

For sake of comparison, the A-10's top speed is around 370kt, while an F-16 is just comfortable somewhere around 450kt.

Anyway, on the subject of aircraft with huge guns: AC-130 ftw. Take a C-130 Hercules, add two 20mm Vulcan cannon, two 7.62mm machineguns, a 40mm cannon and a <i>105mm howitzer</i> and you have the AC-130H "Spectre" gunship.
