Actualy the whole conecept of the new engines is to be mroe efficnet than the old, look at HL2 it runs on older systems although it doesnt look much worse than everything turned up full.

Either they found a way to get minus AA and AT so it looks like lego far away but, if you go reaaaaaaally close it's like that. Or they let those who buy it may come and play at NASA's supa computah and form a big line.

I can't say I'm impressed with that outdoor shot though....

Looks like what Stalker and Far Cry are capable of coming up with.

    Guess again!

P.S. Love the Mike avatar/sig combo.

The outdoor shot is much more impressive than Far Cry or S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s screenshots. The texture on the grass is very convincing - it doesn't look like a flat picture painted on a stage floor.

    OK I will

    <a href='http://www.stalker-game.com/download/gallery/screenshots/middle/sb_xray_53.jpg' target='_blank'>One</a>

    <a href='http://www.stalker-game.com/download/gallery/screenshots/middle/sb_xray_54.jpg' target='_blank'>Two</a>

    <a href='http://www.stalker-game.com/download/gallery/screenshots/middle/sb_xray_42.jpg' target='_blank'>Three</a>

    <a href='http://www.stalker-game.com/download/gallery/screenshots/middle/sb_xray_35.jpg' target='_blank'>Four</a>

    <a href='http://www.stalker-game.com/download/gallery/screenshots/middle/sb_xray_45.jpg' target='_blank'>Five</a>

Now I find those shots much more impressive than the big outdoor expanse that's shown off in the Unreal Engine demo.

Hl2 works on old computer becuase it was being made for 6 years nearly and it was well made i doubt unreal 3 will becuase they will want it out fast for more money so rather than make it for old computers (to an extent) make it for new one lasts longer too
  • MedHeadMedHead Join Date: 2002-12-19 Member: 11115Members, Constellation
Well, what impressed me the most about the outdoor shot (as I said earlier) was the ground texture, and those screenshots to which you linked are as disappointing as Half-Life 2's ground texture(s). The grass sprites stick in the ground without actually looking like they're part <b>of</b> the ground, and they're rather low-quality (think Half-Life sprite quality). So no, I still find the Unreal Engine 3.0 screenshot more impressive.

Must say that S.T.A.L.K.E.R is an impresive game the ai alone is out standing then the gfx are uber if they succed we will indeed have a game of the year(s)

That outdoor shot was taken without AA or AF. Turn them on and it'll look fabulous (<i>way</i> better than Far Cry).

Your point? Venmoch posted them because he said he thought they looked better than Unreal Engine 3.0's screenshot in this thread. I disagreed. Whether it was a screenshot from a BETA or not is moot.

I'd level the same critcism at the U3 shot too. Look in the lower left corner you can see if you look carefully enough that the sprites still come out of the ground at a weird angle and still look detached from the actual body of terrain.

I'm not saying its bad, I'm just saying that there is more potential in the X-Ray engine and future versions of the CryEngine. Although this is coming from someone who thinks that the outdoors in BF:V was better than UT2004. So it may just be asthetic reasons.....

Plus u3 engine is a lot further off than stalkers it is based on gfx cards than have not even come out yet nor will come out for a while stalker is better gfx for the moment for the fact you can play it. u3 is out in like 4 years time with out delays

I agree Venmoch, the Unreal Engine 3.0 screenshot isn't without its faults. Still, I like it better.

    Fair enough MedHead <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I dunno its probably because I prefer the gritty run down feel of the STALKER shots (Which is what the X-Ray engines built for) to the nice and happy Unreal shot.

    But thats me....

-EDIT- Thanks to Tequila for mentioning the new sig <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> -EDIT-

Once again, I don't see how this does <b>anything</b> to deter the appeal of Unreal Engine 3.0's screenshots.

I just think the U3 engine's outdoor scenes will be more technically impressive because of things like moving cloud shadows (which of course we aren't privy to), the top-class shaders present on the windmills etc.

Artistically speaking, STALKER gets my vote over U3, but I don't think Far Cry compares well.
