Reformatting

It's that time of the year again
Okay I'm about to format for the first time in about a year and a half. So far I have this on the list for downloads:

AVG
Firefox
SP2
Adaware
Spybot

Am I forgetting anything else? Oh yeah and another thing, I have two hard drives (80g and 200g). I want to partition them so I have:
1 8g drive (for windows)
1 10g drive (backup)
1 100g drive (downloads)
Then another drive just for program files/etc.

Can I partition a drive that hasn't been formatted? Thanks!

Right click on an 'official' game and hit properties - there should be a button that lets you back up the data. Or you could just burn the .gcf files to a disk.

I have a DVD burner. So should I just use partition magic to partition the drives? (and can you partition a drive that hasn't been formatted)

Partitioning is the process of splitting up unformatted space in to sections and formatting those sections, so yes.

[EDIT:] Also, if you have a DVD-R, I'd recommend making one of these instead.

Looks a bit complicated for the average user, no?

Meh, I'm not going to partition. It's too much work and a waste of time considering the whole point of formatting is to wipe your drive clean. I don't want to have big build ups of crap. Burning now, formatting in about 30min.

You're gonna regret it one day when Windows screws up and you have to format, losing all of your data in the process. I just make two partitions: OS (5 GB) and Data (~75 GB)

I had some problems while reformatting. My second hard drive got formatted for some reason...ugh. And also I could have sworn that windows xp has a built in format function? All I could get it to do was reinstall windows but not format. So I just went through dos and formatted, then installed win98, then just upgraded to winxp. Pfft. Ohwell, computer is running fast.

Forrester I took your advice and made one partition (11g) for windows. This is the first time I've used firefox after a clean format, and I must say....i've been converted. DAMN YOUS ALL!! Hey SP2 is working this time too, woot!

/edit Should I get any cool firefox plugins? Where would I get them?

if you are using a full install of XP, I know you have options to format it before you install, but using the upgrade version, I doubt it.

Don't forget to save your Favorites folder. Another good one to save is your Application Data folder.

But you installed Windows 98 and then upgraded, so it was acting like an upgrade. If you boot off the XP CD and do a wipe, then you can format the drives as you wish.

That's the reason why I installed Win98. I put the cd in, made the cdrom drive my first drive to startup, and if I remember right it goes into the format/install screen. Mine just loaded windows, then I had to chose a clean install and I'd restart. After that I wanted to format the drive c, but it had setup files on it so I couldnt. That's basically what my problem was...

I've formatted about 4 times and it's never done this. Weird...Ohwell no biggy, computer is running fast and clean
