Most dedicated servers have firewalls but, most have specific ports open to allow incomming connections.

You can run a listenserver and play on the same machine, but it's not really dedicated. listen servers shut down when you shut down the game.

You can also run a dedicated server and change your client port number, then you can play on the same machine you host on but it wouldn't shut down when you quit playing. I don't think that this is a good idea unless you have a crazy-powerful computer system.

how'd you work that? every time I tried clicking on it it says server requires you to validate won id something something and pops back to cannot connect to server.

you cant play because it is a DEDICATED server, it uses your won ID. If you wanna be in the server, start a LISTEN server (a "normal" server)

Actually you can play on the same computer as your DS. You just have to change the port number you play on so for example in my desktop icon for my NSDS the path looks like this

    (D:\SIERRA\Half-Life\hlds.exe -game ns -port 27015 -maxplayers 10 +map NS_Nancy)

while the path for playing one looks like this

(C:\SIERRA\Half-Life\hl.exe -console -game ns -port 27014)

and then I'm able to play and have a DS up.

I'll warn you though, NS doesn't like the combined effect. and pings go way up...

    Sintri, what i do is,

    make server have port -27018

and just connect to up address with no problems

because ns is cpu intensive, i can only play on certain maps. maps like hera, give me 2 fps lol. Ns_nancy gives me 99fps all the way.
