A cat called Mittens? Hello. Cliché?
But I like the twist at the end. The way that "mittens" rises up against Billy (another clichéd name i'm afraid) because perhaps there are untold conflicts in their relationship is a stroke of genius.
The whole story can be seen as a metaphor for life and growing up. Perhaps it is we who are "mittens", and "Billy" represents our parents and our childhood. As we grow up, we must shed our past and take on a personality and life of our own and sadly, our childhood innocence (personified perfectly as Billy) must die so we can continue life.
And the final message of the film, "You all rule", perhaps is congratulating us for shedding our childhood and embracing adulthood, thus completing the cycle of life and becomming fully grown and productive members of society.

My friend the characters are cliche very much on purpose. Billy is a representative of the entirety of the human race, in a very generalized and stereotypical form. Billy, although he loves Mittens, seeks to control and own Mittens, therefore Mittens must destroy his former master to become free. Thus the struggle of these characters is related to a very basic struggle of man versus nature, where Billy represents man and Mittens is nature, which at first is tamed and controlled by man into becoming a typical housepet, but then unleashes his full wild animal side on Billy (in this case with a gun). It is thus illustrated that man cannot control nature and will be destroyed if he tries.
