BTW this sort of thing <i>couldn't</i> happen within 10 lightyears of us because, IIRC, there are like less then 10 stars in that range from us and none of them are interesting enough to cause massively cool explosions.

The nearest star is... well its either Alpha Centauri or Alpha Proxima, can't remember, and thats about 4 light years away. As far as I know (and I think it'd be big enough news that I'd know) we have yet to discover any "habitable" plaents outside our solar system. This is probably due to the fact that we can only detect planets a certain numer of ways, many of which require the planet to be really big and really close to its star. Unsurprisingly, we've only found these as of yet. Perhaps you meant "nearest knwon etra-solar planet"?
