    Your CPU hates you :o

I wouldn't worry about that. 40 is fine. My CPU idles around 50C, though I need to lap my heatsink and put new thermal grease on. Start worrying when it gets in to the 70s.

What processor do you have? My athlon XP runs pretty hot, I guess they all do. Yea...

any number of factors for that small an increase

Temperature / Humidity of room, the load on the CPU, dust/dirt/hair buildup, possibly wear on the ball bearings in the fans causing them to run slightly slower.. could be anything really...

ya ive noticed that AMD processors run hotter than Intel. Does anyone know why this is?

Not any more. The Athlon Thunderbirds were hotter than the sun (Tom's Hardware did a video where they ran it without a heatsink/fan and it set itself on fire), but the new Athlons are pretty cool. They've got some sort of "Cool n Quiet" technology now that is supposed to step the speed down when you don't need it, in order to shut off the fan to keep it quiet, while still keeping it cool (hence the name). The new P4s are a lot hotter than the new Athlons.

    AMD Athlon 64 +3500.

i reapplied the thermal compound.. the comp booted up and idled at 36, but it slowly crept back up to 40 <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Lapping does absolutely no difference at all if the sink is allready flat. Shiny or not makes no difference unless there are huge machining marks or the surface is slightly curved.

Pressure can make a lot more difference.

40 is fine dunno what your getting worried about Zig!

i have a XP 2500+ overclocked to 1.9ghz sits nicely at 40 now but thats with a massive heatsink. Trust air cooling is always the best and coolmaster aquagate sucks!

    it's all good.

I idle at 70*C... is that a bad thing? =/

    (I'm not joking, either).

I'm gunna have to disagree with this, lapping does make a diffrence. It makes the base ultra flat, taking most of the scratches out of it that would otherwise get air in them and cause poor thermal conduction. And the "shiny" look is only because, as an object gets flat it begins to reflect better.

On to the main question: one reason it could be increasing in temp is the thermal paste. It seems that as yours heats up it is causing it to infact loose thermal conductivity. Or, ya know, your heatsink could just be absorbing its max amount of heat before it gets into a sort of heat equilibrium, as the heat is produced from the processor it is taken away at the same rate. So it seems your heatsinks natural temperature before it reaches this is 40*c.

    1 Cpu Heatsink Upgrade + 1 PSU Upgrade + 1 blower fan = 18*C idle temp decrease to 43*C.

turns out it was probably just the house temperature. it's nice and cool now, back at 32*C. last night it was all hot i guess, it stayed at 40 until i went to sleep.

My AMD 64 3500+ (not overclocked at all) idles at 33ºC. But, I'm also using arctic silver 5 thermal paste, and a big zalman heatsink.

yeah i'll see how my huge thermaltake heatpipe heatsink works with AS5.. i wonder how many degrees it'll give me back in comparison to thermaltake's in-box TC...

in one test i read, tc was only behind by like 2 degrees.
