variety is key (but make them 1st!)
it is my personal opinion that defense chambers are the best chamber type in the game. i ALWAYS build them first. not only will the upgrades provided to individuals help for conquest but the healing ability is indispensible when expanding to build minbases around resource rats and offensive tower outposts. i have not found any other chamber as useful to me early on in the game.
there seems to be a lot of discussion of favourite upgrade types. i find it hard to ever stick to one. NS is a constantly dynamic game, you've got to become what the situation warrants. i am sure that the kharaa did not become such great bacterial conquerers by producing cookie-cutter aliens. *insert enthusiastic growl here*
here are some of my thoughts that i hope could help regarding when i prefer each type of defensive upgrade:
Carapace...my hero. we all love it i am sure. it's my default choice and probably fits most of the situations. if u intend to take a skulk, always choose this option for the most bang for your buck. and don't dis skulks, i love chomping all the way to endgame. also, if you are well-guarded by umbra, gorges and D-chambers
Redemption...i find this most useful later in the game when there are lots of gorges and defensive turrets available to heal me. i find it useless for skulks and not very handy for gorges. if u need to use it as gorge, i suggest you drop more chambers and turrets to keep you from getting in difficult situations. it is most useful for hit and run attacks when u want to be sure to cause as much damage as possible without thinking about bugging out. i am rather reckless so redemption fits my playing style perfectly. definately the choice of the self-preserving kharaamikaze ~;)
Regeneration...like to hit and run, but hate having to walk all the way back to the battle? well you are probably fond of fade or onos unlike i among those who prefer to stay small. this is a great update when you're stuck in the middle of nowhere, attacking turrets or marines and then falling back to the shadows with no-one and nothing to assist you. it's great psychologically as well. those lugheads can pump you full of lead as much as they want and after a brief vacation try to do it again. wear them out mentally as well as physically. harassed and fearful lugheads won't build as fast and may split up if you're lucky.
well, that's my contribution...can't wait to hear others thoughts
and long live the hive!
