Anger is rising, the dark side takes over controll. It is done.
Well, the reason either seems so good is because before KOTOR 2, the most recent good offline RPG made was KOTOR 1, and before that we haven't had anything good since Planescape: Torment or both Fallouts. Nothing. Nothing good at all.*
*If you feel that this is a near-offensive statement of generalization or ignorance, it is. I'm trying to draw out people who can argue to the contrary, because I'm actively looking for a new rpg to play. If I've missed out on something good, let me know immediately. I'm a fan of Deus Ex and Vampire Bloodlines and all, but lately I've been feeling this intense need for the same sort of amazing RPG experience I felt when playing PS:T or the Fallout games. I even tried Baldur's Gate II, which I'd been told was good. It was pretty good, but...it wasn't a Fallout or Torment. <insert fake dramatic sobbing and attention-getting frowny face>

I have to agree. KOTOR is one of my favourite games, probably my favourite RPG that i've ever played. KOTOR 2 is good, i have to admit, especially being a SW fanboy, it gave me a SW game i could really be pleased with in every aspect, but i felt it was more of an expansion pack rather than an entirely new game. The story does continue on, but is a little more confusing and leaves you wanted a KOTOR 3 to fill the voids the first two left.
The graphics are essentially the same, the locations aren't as exotic, but it's still a very solid RPG game and worth the money, dispite it's shortcomings following up KOTOR.
Tried it. The fact that I went plugin-happy and probably threw game balance out the window in the process doesn't help, so I've since put all my thoughts about the combat system and plot aside. I'll admit it was addictive for the weekend or so I tried it -- but that's just because it was about as close as one can get to an MMORPG without an internet connection. I just felt a lack of interaction with believable NPCs; I read a recent interview with someone from the Bethesda team on things they'll do better when they make Fallout 3, and the accompanying editorial called Morrowind's NPC's "dialogue vending machines." I agree with it wholeheartedly, and hope they do better when they make Fallout 3.
I truly wish Steam was industry standard.

You should definately look out for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion then. Other than the obvious visual update they're making, they're entirely reworking the combat system to be less... crap, and giving each and every NPC a purpose, unique dialogue, a daily routine, and interaction with each other, add on top of that Morrowind's freeform gameplay, huge game world and totally non-linear story, and Bethesda are definately onto what will be this (or next) year's finest single player RPG.
If no, I can always swap the Geforce3 back in (not like I'll be playing anything else for a while, heh) but I'd rather not have to bother.
To be honest, i played it on Xbox, so i hadn't had a single bug at all.

If by "messed up" you mean it would flat-out crash, that was a problem on ATi's side of the fence, which they've since fixed in newer Catalyst drivers.
If by "messed up" you mean graphical oddities, I haven't ever read of such problems with ATI cards in KOTOR 1, but if it was happening to you, it may also have been fixed with newer catalyst drivers.
Dont let anyone ruin the story for you, because it is incredible.

o ill ruin it! your realy bastillas transvestite sister that travels to the future to have a affair with darth vadar! DUN DUN DUNNNNNN
Here's a generic hint that'll help you enjoy the KOTOR 1 a lot more:
Ending the game as a sinless goody-two-shoes or completely heartless evil wretch is still easily possible if you do things more typical of the opposing side on an infrequent basis. Being on the absolute extremes to either side doesn't even change the ending cutscenes from being a "mostly" good or evil Jedi. So feel free to do something different once in awhile if you think it'll be fun.

Actually what I mean is a severe FPS drop.
I eventually fixed it by dropping down to some pretty old drivers (the ones from around KOTOR1's release), which I found out about by googling 'kotor radeon'. But since those old drivers severely hamper performance in other games, I was hoping Bioware/Obsidian had made it so I wouldn't have to.
Second, can I still break the game? If you make a point of being gray, all the way through, you can commit to the Dark Side ending yet get the Light Side endgame sequence. The fact that was even possible annoyed me no end.

Severe FPS drop on the Dantooine fields? Yeah, that was ATi's fault.
It fixed all the problems I had with the first KOTOR.
Yeah be lucky you can even run it with any AA at all punk. Some of us are happy if we get 2x anisotropic filtering.
The story was very good in my opinion, it had some not so unique aspects to the story but then again very few things do.
I did many if not all of the little side quests and man I loved making my character flourish into such a great guy lol.
I dont think you could have gotten the "blue meter" up any higher lol.
The story and deeds of Davis shall live on in the history of the republic and the jedi for a long time
I cant wait for KotOR to be on my PC heehee.
Quite a different system on Light/Dark side... referred to as "influence"
And the game works with things called "Prestige classes" Meaning once you reach about 15, concerning your alignment, you will be one of 3 classes for either Dark or Light.
Was not a spoiler, just warning you, that you cant quite revert from side to side, once the time comes, your stuck there.
And most of all, pay attention to some conversations...as it sets up the game in some areas according to your choices.
