<div class="IPBDescription">overworkage when gaming</div> alright, well let me lay out some basic info about my internet connection. i recently changed isps and so far have a network that is atm, unprotected. when doing basic things, such as web browsing or using AIM, everything seems normal and my modem lights dont blink much. everything is fine. however, when i play swat 4 online, my modem starts blinking furiously and my ping is in the 300's. my modem acts like its gonna explode. what the hell is going on

Is it <i>just</i> SWAT 4 or does it happen with other games?
Download a multiplayer demo if you have to and check.

well ive only tried swat 4. however, im pretty sure my internet is to blame for my crappy ping. the servers are usually located in the east coast where im from and everyone else seems to get very good ping. so the netcode is alright.

edit: this is slightly unrelated. how do i protect my network

Download a firewall like <a href='http://soho.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm' target='_blank'>SPF.</a> Play a game or two, then quit and open the traffic logs in your firewall. You should then be able to see what programs have been accessing the web while you've been playing.

If youre using a gateway to connect its possible a virus got into your gateways software. When I reformat and leave the firewall off on my gateway the same thing happens (And a host of viruses are installed on my PC)

If you want to see what's actually happening, you can do a network trace and/or a perfmon trace. Neither one is particulary easy to read without experience, but if you want to go the diagnostic route some of us can help.

We need more info about your configuration here to really help though. DSL? Cable modem? What sort of WIFI device and standard? Who is your ISP?

It sounds a bit like your ISP is doing packet shaping on your network. BUt without more info, that's just an idle guess.

I suggest going with a trial run of Sygate or some other software based firewall to see what kind of traffic is going on just to see what is natural.

I'd run winamp and play a high bandwidth stream or even multiple instances of the same stream to see if your ISP is at fault or if it's somewhere else to blame.

I also suggest downloading CableNut(http://www.cablenut.com/) and choose a preset that describes your enviroment and restart your pc and THEN see if you still have problems..

Sygate is a software firewall that will monitor just about all traffic, in and out, of your PC that it's installed to. You can even set permission states to software applications preventing them from access the internet. It will detect port scans and other occurances of that nature.

Yes you want to leave it on, if you don't mind using the resources for it, for protection, but here it's just a diagnostic aid to see what's going on.

i am using some recommended settings with cable nut and other stuff. i dont think they helped. anyways, im guessing that im in a similar situation that CWAG was in. ill dl rtcw and see if i get bad ping in that game also

Are you using Windows XP? If so, make sure you have the inbuilt firewall switched off.

You wont notice the changes that CableNut made unless your doing something bandwidth intensive.. like running 256/512k audio/video stream in winamp or something similar. I was just curious if your ISP throttles your bandwidth causing the latency.

You've just said basically what the problem is. "i'm surfing unprotected atm". That is you're whole problem. You most likely have some spyware or maybe even a virus. I remeber that right after I reformatted Windows I went on the internet to get some drivers and my comp got infected even before I could get my virus and firewall up.
I reccomend the ZoneAlarm free firewall (<a href='http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1012_zl/zlsSetup_55_062_004.exe' target='_blank'>direct download</a>). Also, try resetting your modem if you have'nt done so already. If all else fails, call the RCN company tech support.

Sounds a bit like the problem I've been having. Are you useing a wireless adapter? If so try changing its PCI slot. Or try turning off your modem for an hour or so then turning it back on.

i get the same problem... i have RCN cable now too, but i run ZA and have been running it since i got this comp..

every once in a while my good speed will peter out and give me weird intermittent lag in games... like in HL2DM it appears to everyone else that i have a good stable ping, when in reality i get fluid play for maybe .5sec and then 5 sec of frozen lag..

    what

    the

    ****?

Are you sure you've set the input/output levels correctly? I had a problem with online games and lag, and it was due to my dad's router being set to 110 mbps instead of 10, or something along those lines. He changed the settings, so my memory isn't totally accurate. That, and it's been several years now...

i figured this b*tch out by the way.

it happened when i made a LAN game to test out some custom models.

    i got lagged...

    in a lan game.

    on my own server.

    so i TURNED OFF ZONEALARM....

    bingo. no more lag.

If you don't have a problem why hijack the thread, mate? No hate intended or anything, but Elitebear's prob hasn't been solved yet, or at least, it's not been posted that Elitebear solved it.

As for the firewall, Zonealarm isn't really all that evil, maybe you just had to configure your ports or something, so that the games you played could have open ports.

    ------------------
Elitebear, Norton is powerful, but sometimes too powerful. I highly recommend AVG or ZA.
