The actual name for this speach wouldn't happen to involve the words 'logical' and 'argument' now would it?

It's true. A good Speaker regales the crowd and appeals on many levels. IF you want to make them really remember your speech, make it informative (get what you want to say across, without throwing too much at them at once), make it interesting (choose information to tell them that they can understand and put jokes or some other form of witticism in between each block of information), make it interrogative (ask rhetorical questions of them, inspire thought in them about the subject so that they are actively participating in your speech even though they aren't speaking back to you) and make it incredible (blow them away by having it memorized or give them an anecdote they won't forget or keep them laughing the whole time or inspire them to think about what you have to say).

    I hope that helps.

    Informative
    Interesting
    Interrogative

If you mention the Manhunt fiasco (quick summary: kid kills another kid and Manhunt is blamed as apparently the murderer was obsessed with it) be sure to mention that the Daily Mail published their paper with the front cover in black with "BAN THESE EVIL GAMES" on and a list of around 5 popular games on the front, including Unreal Tournament and Doom 3 (and of course with a large article inside about the murder). Why mention this in particular? Because a few days later it transpired that it was actually the victim who owned the game and so it couldn't really be blamed at all...and the Daily Mail seemed to forget the whole thing as if it had never happened once this was revealed. This to me is a clear indication of the media exploiting targetable mediums for the reason of making sales, rather than because there is actually an issue at hand.

But then, that's the Daily Mail. :)

I hate speeches, listening to them and making them. They need to be outlawed.

Also, keep it as short as possible. Nobody likes a long speech.

There's a great essay on holding speeches by Kurt Tucholsky, the best German author of the 20th century; unfortunatly, I can't find a translation. His main points were:

Short sentences.

Short sentences.

Short sentences.

Keep the language simple.

What you cut can't bore the audience.

Keep it to the point.

Short sentences.

Short sentences.

Short sentences.

As for an introduction, I used the following quite successfully a while ago:
"I have a confession to make. I killed my friends. All of them.
I shot them, bit them, maimed them, poisoned, strangled, burned and drowned them. I pushed them into bottomless pits and nailed them against walls. Afterwards, we sat together and discussed the best moments."

Now that, is one hell of a good way to get their attention and have them laughing. You put them in the right "mode" to actually hear your speech.

If this is a high school audience you are giving it to, expect them to try to act as bored and irritated as possible, so you have to go for maximum effect.

Also mention the fact that usually games that are blasted for their violence usually get many parts overlooked. For example, in the whole Manhunt thing one of the accusations was that you randomly went round killing for no reason. And if I recall there was a nice storyline that went with it.
