Should I get it?
Just got XP Pro on my computer, and I'm wondering whether or not to get Service Pack 2, since I remeber hearing about how it made some games not work.

Also, is there any way to get process viewer working again?

Much thanks to you all of r tech support,
Chimpy

I asked a similar question on the modNS.org fora.

View the Windows XP Service Pack 2, Is it REALLY REALLY necessary? thread. If you can weed through all the Firefox rift raft you'll see some good replies.

lol when I was in college and SP2 came out the IT dept would not install it on the college network until MS fixed it.

They updated a partial part of the LAN to test it and something really bad happened.

But then again when this Sp2 made the news they even said that only about 10% of people and companies etc who installed it had any problems with it.

I think a poll, would be much more appropriate, 3 options:

    Installed it, Works fine
    Installed it, works worse
    Didnt Install it.

Id heard it was a lot more stable but still since like a higher percentage of the world use XP 10% with errors is a HUGE ammount of bugs for a product patch.

Still, I keep seeing that icon, BEGGING me to upgrade.

Dont know how much longer i can resist...

do it, just be prepared to format

it is always best to keep upto date on MS updates.

however there are a %age of programs that will stop working with SP2....

My version of XP was the XP with SP2 (came on a funky holographic disk too!)

And so far, everything is working super duper.

I waited to install SP2 for a while. During the time that I went without it, I actually turned off the Windows Update check so I didn't have to see the notification for it. I have it installed now, and I can't really tell the difference. IE (which I rarely use) seems to be more annoying to use now with some of the additional security features, but I removed all of the Security Center notifications, so I can't really tell the difference. Nothing's broken, nothing is faster or slower.

If a poll were made, it would need to be:

    Installed it, works better
Installed it, can't tell the difference
    Installed it, works worse
    Didn't install it

Being in tech, I have installed SP2 on alot of machines.

    Some common problems:
    - drivers not working
This means all sound, video, NIC, etc drivers must be re-installed

    - programs stop working
Some programs may need patches insatlled or updated. Some really old ones may stop working

    - taskbar doesnt show up
Only way to fix it has been uninstall SP2 and reinstall it

Overall, most install without issue, but this is just an idea of what may go wrong. In the end, nothing major, just annoyances. If you have no popup blocker (ie firefox) and firewall, it may be worth it.

I'm still scared; I haven't installed it yet. I've got firewalls so I don't worry.

Yea, the whole reason I wasn't here in the last day and a half (like anyone noticed ) was because the craptastic IT department at my dorm is basically forcing everyone to run Symantec Antivirus' realtime scan, to not have any any viruses, to have all windows updates ...and apparently I need to check these things once a week.

...Which is just BS, because I - in 12 years of using the internet - have never had anything worse than adware attack any computer while I was operating it. Along with the fact SP2 adds no real benefit to my computer (except - ooooh it gets to take longer to start up). Add that to the fact it didn't want to install at first and I had to get it working because the IT people didn't know what the **** they were doing (...you know, except how she deleted my internet settings, and screwed up my connection - but I couldn't use it at that time anyway, so it doesn't really matter, right?), along with the fact there's now a password-protected-against-uninstall Symantec AntiVirus package on MY private computer - and you get one **** off gecko.

[on that note, if anyone knows how to remove password protected programs without knowing the password, send me some advice - because the IT department at this dorm is really, really **** me off]

    Format :-p

Still that sucks, check anything youv signed with them and see if you gave them the right to do so, if not tell them to uninstall it or youl take legal action, although this may get you isolated
