Anyone Still Play Eve Online?

There was a thread about this a year or so ago, but I'd rather not bump that.

I just finally decided to break down and play an MMORPG, after resisting for a long time. And since I love all things sci-fi and space-related, I decided to try EVE online. I'm enjoying it pretty well so far after playing for a few days. It's obviously not for twitch gamers who like constant action, but for people who like slow RPG skill building and lots of very sexy visuals, it's quite good. I like the fact that I can just turn away and do something else for a few minutes without it mattering at all. Also I love that I can build skills while I'm not even online. Makes the work day a little less painful to know that by the time I get home I'll have trained the skill needed to fit that new missile launcher on my ship.

So is anyone still playing this, or has everyone given up and gone on to other things?

The 3 empire wars we have help to keep things exciting and we are also hauling our pos 50 jumps into 0.0, folks will be happy they no longer have to haul 12 jumps to the refinery with their ark and bistot

Played the Beta early on, and in Retail only a few weeks. The main thing that bothered me about EvE was the bookmark system - sure its nice if you're just a casual user, but the utter inability to mass copy/trade/paste bookmarks, or to at least make warping options closer to reality really started **** me off.

But thats probably because I was mostly into PvP, and in the instances when you avoid warpscrambling you really, really want to be able to land at that Stargate at D-0 not 15000 - unless somehow you have a boner for laserbeams, stasishugs and missiles. So it turns out the main thing determining wether you were a good combatant was the time you spent copying bookmarks by hand or making your own. After a while its just pure, utter tedium - so meh.

I was never a great fan of the endless rows of laggy menus either, or for that matter the "Just wait" skill system. But I endured for the sake of yet another secksay space opera. But the bookmarks were just too much

If you for some reason really enjoy space and flightsim mixes, give JumpGate a whirl by the way. Sure, its way, way, way past its prime - but mostly just visually. But for those that haven't spent 3 years with it yet, it features one of the sweetest space combat systems known to man - a simplistic yet fun model with newtonian inertia and a hint of drag, its primarily tactical instead of twitchy. Fights are decided by who manuevers, evades, intersects, docks and dodges missiles more deftly - aiming plays a large role as well, but it too is mostly determined by an understanding of the ships handling instead of a quick hand.

Err, anyway. Yeah, as if anyone couldn't smell from a mile away that I was going to mention JumpGate

While I have not played Eve Online, and don't mean to spoil it for you, I still want to present you with ye link.
As I have mentioned, I have not played the game, and thus cannot verify whether what this guy says about the game is all right, or whether he just never really got the concept of the game, but nevertheless, I think you should read. Heck, it's a good read all by itself. Longish though.

If you want a sci fi MMORPG Star Wars: Galaxies isn't so bad. Unless you're some sort of crazy Star Wars freak. Then it's pretty bad. But if you add in the space expansion, you can't really go wrong.

I've gotta agree with Tycho really. I used to play Eve but unless you're willing to do nothing but play it, you're going to be far behind (in terms of money and skills) everyone else who plays.

But SW:G is good, and in my opinion, the main thing people have against it is that it's not really true Star Wars, just a copy. More fun over a longer period than Eve though, as all you do in Eve is trade, mine or fight, and the only difference between fighting and mining is you click different weapons, and trading is just... setting a course, sticking it on auto, and sitting back.

There simply isnt enough to do with EVE unless you are someone who defenantly engrosses themself with the game's backround, story, and ficitional daily/weekly news casts. Otherwise its just a few clicks and a lot of sitting back, and listening to EVE-Radio.

Yeah, I used to play this game last year, and had fun for a while, but after a few months the novelty of it all wore off. Like Haze said, there isn't much you can do. Yes, it's a great PvP game, and a brutal one at the same time. You lose your ship, you lose your modules, and risk to get pod-killed which can cost you implants which cost tons of money in this game, and are more or less vital to your progress. In the end, the penalties of dying kept me away from PvP'ing, until I accidentally warped into a Megathron with my 30mil mod Mission-runner Blasterax...Great battle, got her down to Structure as well, but I lost, and with it the will to play.

There was just not enough content.

Oh yeah, another thing, it's very dependant on other people. What friends you can hang out with, what corp you find, can make or break the game.

That's why I prefer WoW, you can still have fun and do stuff even if your friends are not around.

But EVE is still a good game nonetheless, the pvp-side of it would wipe the floor with WoW's.

    Not when battlegrounds is released...

And they've released a whole crap load of content latly for EVE. Seems cool, although I'm not touching it. There is so much to read up just to enjoy it its too much of a hassle at the moment. Its the in depth sci-fi roleplayer's dream MMORPG.

That was a good story LF. I read it once before; it was posted on the SA forums originally I think, and I'd actually been looking for it for a while. The guy has a fun writing style. I have yet to come across problems like he describes, of course I haven't gone lower than 0.4 security space yet either. I think ultimately my goal is to get a ship big enough and a group of like minded individuals in ships big enough to go out and make life miserable for the gate campers and the people who measure their success in the game by their number of pod kills. But that's a ways off. For the time being all I can do is fly around doing simple missions and killing pirates that go pop in two shots. I don't really see myself playing this game for years (unless they do add some serious content) but it is pretty fun for the time being.

And by the way, someone mentioned free trial time. They've got it set up odd, you can't just get a free trial, but someone already in the game can send you a two week free trial. So if anyone does want one just PM me, it seems I get an unlimited number to send out.

WoW is unequivocally the best MMO out right now, sorry though EVE does sound like it has some nice visuals...
