I can vouch for that, for some reason sprites are making it easier to see players. I wonder if it is still the case in b6?

I remember a dev saying something about the particle systems supposed to highligh hte outline of a cloaked player so that cloaked gorges couldn't hide by res nodes (this was way back in 1.0x so not too many of you might remember), however they might have just been saying that as an excuse because it seemed like a pretty stupid reason. Dont take my word for it though.

If a cloaked person is in a particle cloud (spores for example) they create a very obvious empty space outline where particle sprites should be.

ps: powerstrip is not lame it is a useful system tool and I for one would not be able to play halflife without it, the best lighting I can get on my system using the in game gamma controls for ns is comparable to walking in the forest on a cloudy night.

I compare it to that one scene in Star Trek, where they see the effect of the "cloaking device" because the stars are moving funny on the outline of the cloaked ship.

Or hell, play AvP 1 or 2 (WITHOUT THE PRIMAL HUNT EXPANSION) and you get a knack for spotting little visual discontinuities.

Is anyone actually gonna post some pics so I can compare with what I normally see?

I'm too lazy to read 3 pages. ~~

The easiest way to see a cloaker is to max out your bright ness and gamma (yes, I know this will put a strain on your eyes, but its worth it!!) and sit still in a certain area. If the cloaker moves you should see a slight outline of his body and he will be moving very slowly so get your gun ready <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

Cloaked skulks are easy to do if your playing games like Avp2, where if you practice for a while you will see a cloaked predator miles away. I see cloaked skulks very easily practically if i just look for a even little distortion.

a cloaked model has a kind of wireframely look. As a skulk this is compact, and can be seen. As a onos, its less compact but since a onos is alot larger you might have a better look on it.

I find onos far easy to see then the packed skulk simply cause a skulk walks low.

Point is you can see a distortion/blur of some sort, which has nothing to do with gamma, but purely with a videocart strong enought to render details. \o/

I tend to use sound of previous movements combined with random shots and obvious spots. However I tend to see skulks cloaked in the middle of the floor pretty often as opposed to corners and ceilings. However there has been many times that I don't see them regardless of how hard I look, so for me its a random thing. Silence is much scarier than cloaking.

Something i noticed a while ago was that if you have a dark texture, then glass, then a cloaked alien or structure. you can see them plain as day (i.e. empty space where you should see glass).
  • DC_DarklingDC_Darkling Join Date: 2003-07-10 Member: 18068Members, Constellation, Squad Five Blue, Squad Five Silver
glas, certain textures, umbra, gas, steam, etc.
  • j3stj3st Join Date: 2004-06-28 Member: 29602Members
most experienced players have no trouble spotting claoked skulks on the move. i have no trouble spotting them if i'm on the lookout for them even at lightgamma 2.5.
but spotting them when they are stationary on the wall/ceiling whatever (just not gas, etc) is just crazy.

I just love it when i go into a room I know a cloaked skulk is in (and only can get kills through cloak) and watch him walk towards me only to throw a hand nade into his mouth.

Since players change their cong. cloak is almost useless ( they can see u perfectly)
The image above, well he must have adj his graphic stuff .
infact the idea of cloak is : u cannot see them (the aliens)
I dunno is that a glitch or sth. But the sen chmaber become **** in b6
anyway, u find a way to see those cloaker, NS community find a way to stop u.-increase the **** ability of sen chamber.

Cloaking works better when you're somewhere they don't think to look for you like... well... just wierd places. On the ground in front of the door is a bad idea as is moving in the marine's field of vision. Cloaking is a tool but its not infallible. Marines have learned that's its better safe then sorry so they spray bullets at places the skulks normally ambush people. If the skulk I was shooting ran away and hid in a deadend room I would be looking him too along the ground, corners, etc... If Mr. skulklet was halfway up the wall to my right I probably wouldn't see him. then this happens

I only started notice cloacking on very high resalutions. And it also depends what texture they are against, IN a hive room, forget it, its a 1 in 10 chance for me to notice. Walking into marine start on a pale grey flore. You WILL be noticed.

Cloacking is still very usefull and people can still get the drop on me. If they are hiding in a good spot. Like on a wall, etc.

i have been finding it really easy to notice cloaked skulks now, the slight blur always catches my attnetion. and fades and oni are so damn easy to spot even when standing totaly skill, alot easier to see than skulks imo. 100% cloaking in b6 would be brill

I've sometimes seen them, but thats when I was really concentrated into the game. Other times I just run into the room and be killed or kill.

Besides your terrible grasp on the written English language, your logic is also wrong. Cloakers are NOT supposed to be impossible to see, otherwise they would have 100% invisibility (they wouldn't even be rendered, it would be literally impossible to see them) and nothing you could do would help see them. They're slightly visible, and this means that with settings appropriate for the individual marine, they can see cloaked objects or players. Personally, I can't see things sitting still for the most part, but I can see moving cloaked players fairly easily (anyone who has played starcraft or another game with "shimmering" invisible units knows what I'm talking about). It's a matter of having my gamma at a level I can see at (which isn't high, screenshots available on request) and watching for stupid skulks trying to walk RIGHT UP TO ME. Half the problem with NS is it requires alien players to think and not be obvious, and 95% of people are so obvious you know what they're doing most likely before they know themselves.

-) Turn OFF your Anti Aliasing in the drivers menu

    Explanation:
-) Anisotropic Filtering OFF will make the far textures a bit blurry

Those are settings for your video card. If you turn them off to see cloakers in NS, you will most likely want to turn them back on for other games where you aren't trying to see invisible units.
