it has to do with modifying lighting or something in quake I to make it look REALLY REALLY REALLY NICE like doom 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and since hl is based on quake 1............................ CHECK IT OUT here's what barney said about it

A freind of mine told me about a mod for Quake 1 (yes quake 1 - the engine HL was based on) that has radically altered the rendering system to that similar to Doom3. I just compared Quake 1 to Doom 3, please don't hurt me, just look at the screenshots below.

The new renderer has the following kewl new additions:

-Per pixel lighting
-Bump mapping
-Realtime lighting and shadow effects
-Gloss texture effects

You can download the addon for Quake 1, and it's just amazing

This is really neat stuff, and can potentially be applied to the HL engine and maybe even CS. I'm sure it's not bug free but it's an incredible achievement.
