I don't think it should need a mod to be able to play. I had mouse2 being my flashlight rofl.

    HL2: <img src='http://www.snorg.co.uk/forum/images/Jawdrop.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

HL2 looked even better when I kicked my FX into DX9...ran like a toilet after Fat "Illegitimate Child" sat on it, but it was beautiful.

    edit: That was a self-censor btw...lol

dragon mech both the d3 and hl2 screenies you posted look awful to me
especially the the bottom d3 one as for me all the monsters had glowing eyes and less square edges. The ant lion fangs look v low res also

    Tailsin...

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Personally, I'd much prefer to have a sleek engine that can push buttery graphics, rather than something the size of a Mack truck lugging around plasticine critters, designed specifically for one GPU line out of spite.

That is to say, I'd rather have it show up on HL2, myself.

I can't help but find it funny that those supporting the Doom3 engine can only paste the beautiful PR screenshots from iD, and then throw in an HL2 shot of the most barren portion of the game. But I guess that's all that a neophyte spin doctor can try for, in his defense.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    you sound like a source fan boy to me <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> (pls dont ban me!! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

which GPU line? forgive me if im being dumb
all the screenies look poor quality to me and i have a GF4 4400ti,not even a dx9 card
i had a fair bit of gfx card lag from both games and could not run d3 over medium settings (well i could but it made me feel sick to play for any length of time)
but just look at that last screenie...its almost ns already, could you imagine that being a skulk clinging to the wall? ready to leap at you
i dont know all about techy stuff NERDS and BLURBS and whatever <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> but d3 does look made for NS

mouse 2 was my flash light too, i use it for last inv in NS

I don't hate it, by any means - I just think the game runs very poorly considering my hardware. It has nice points (ie: sextacular lighting effects) but I don't think I should need 5 mods and a dozen tweaks to get it to look and run good. HL2 was jawdrop.gif right out of the box. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
You dont. Just extract the pk4's, all the performance issue is the engine decompiling the pk4, just extract them to the base dir and remove them from it. Sorted.

(Its not an engine defect, its just HDD's arent fast enough..)

And the 2nd and 6th (i think) pictures of D3 you posted look awesome =)

And the engine doesnt ONLY support bumpmapping - So any mods created could use the other kinds. Like paralax.

But as for which NS would be on - either or neither.

here's the basic 3 engines we should choose from.

    Source engine from HL2:

    pros:easy to port,VALVe already likes NS,GREAT organic graphics,damn good quality phyiscs,more modern,likes pie,good AI

cons:many people may still have to update their rigs, some bugs [not as many as the D3 engine],2ed smallest mod community available from the choices, not everyone has HL2

    D3 engine from Doom 3:

pros:gives a nice touch to organic fleshy creatures, wonderful graphics for low REQUIRMENTS,decent physics engine, largest mod community for the 3 selections, lots of people already own doom3

cons:not the greatest physics engine, some people may still have to update their rigs, but less likely,WAY to dark,no alt. fire system,VERY buggy, sucky AI

Unreal engine 3 from -nothing yet-

Pros:BEST graphics,BEST physics system,BEST organic displayment, going to be supported by a MASSIVE number of fans, best AI,Trusted maker, likes to eat the source engine for lunch, and the D3 engine for a midnight snack

cons:Not released yet.EVERYONE WILL! have to update their rigs (unless their rig has some 512 mb of video ram),VERY high requirements,no mod community, unknown if it will even be modable,WILL be a pain to map 2 million+ polys for a detail mesh,on top of a reg. mesh of 5k polys, regular maps can be 200 million + polys in one screen

    <a href='http://www.unrealtechnology.com/html/technology/ue30.shtml' target='_blank'>-unreal 3 engine info-</a>

One other point, HL2s physics beat Doom3's physics about the head. I have yet to see a bad physical reaction in HL2, whereas after 3 seconds of beating about the ragdolls in Doom3 I was able to freeze one.

Doom3 is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less buggy then hl2 i don't know where you got the notion doom3 is buggy.

Anyway here is what D3 looks like on my rig bar the jpeg compression...

You are all judging both HL2 and D3 on what the game itself is like.

Ok lets judge HL1 on the game and not the mods - NOWAY would i have thought that NS could be done on HL1, i mean.. look at it. It wasn't good with atmosphere, no amazing lighting...

Thats the beuty of game engines, they ARE NOT the game they are created for, they can be twisted and bent to do what you want them to do, to some extent.

You say D3 "engine" is dark.. nope thats the way the game was created, it gives the atmosphere of spooky and you do jump a couple of times in the game.

As for game play, being old school, I prefer the fast pace of D3 over HL2. As games I prefer D3.. I don't know about the engines capabilities, I do know i downloaded a grav gun mod for D3 and it feels alot more gravity, alot less magnetic than HL2's grav gun.

One thing i will say, atleast D3 didnt need a patch to fix a sound issue the week after release <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

i said 640x480 cause your health indicator looks so big

it does kinda look NS already tho dont it?
im sure the faithful would follow if a version of NS ever did come out on d3

    AMD 64 3400+ and a 6800GT..

You could easily resuse half the D3 textures for a NS mod they are so similar! And the slimly bloody things and stuff could look soo cool as infestations in NS with some tweaking so they dont't look sooo gross...

hey guys im quite happy that im not the only ns:d3 supporter <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

after reading through all of your posts in the meantime i really think that the dev team shall do little potions (of maps, models, etc) on all engines to see if they are capable for ns and then pick out the best.
i just hoped to get some more bits of atmosphere into ns.

and even if some of you consider a
    <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo--> "where is he is cant see him"
as a con ... i would really like it. it is the fear of the unknown that creates tension in such games.

whats more i think those hardware requirements shall be left out of the discussion ... all of us (who will continue playing computer games) will have to upgrade sooner or later.

even if it is hard for those of you who dont own a 3000$ system (including me) ... wait a year or two and it will only be worth half or even less of what it costs today.
and ns:<engine> wont be released tomorrow dont forget that.

you may continue posting your system spec & framerates now to prove that _your_ engine is best (because it would have a greater player base today ...) <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

A little something about that. They licensed the Havok2 engine, so infact they didn't made it at all, and it's not a part of the Source engine. I doubt if you were to license the Source engine you'd get the Havok2 engine with it. You would probably have to seperately license Havok2, which costs more moneh.

Doom3's physics engine is made in-house however, so you will most likely get full source access to it, to use it in your new game. And if you have to buy Havok2 seperately for Source, you might as well do it for Doom3. Doom3 + HL2 physics = gg <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

That comment was ment for NS2, however access to the physics engine will probably be very limited for HL2 mods as well. Since I doubt Havok2 would appreciate their source-code laying on the street in the form of the HL2 SDK.

And yes Dragon_Mech's screenshots are made with details set to ugly-as-sin. I'm sorry but that's not how Doom3 looks.

One nice thing about source is the 3D skyboxes add a great deal of depth to outdoor area's...

I've not read all the replies here, but my 2c:

I'd love for NS to go to Source. The netcode is (ironically) only bettered by HL1. I'd hate to see NS go to a graphically intense engine- Doom3 and UT2k4 is just about playable, but considering all the amazing things that the NS team will do to the engine, both would probably be un-playable for most of us.

Enter the Source engine- it scales perfectly for low-end PCs.

It is for me, and I've got a solid rig*. It's what a very good number of people would expect to see when they play the game. And TBH it looks like crap and still doesn't run very well.

As I said before - it would be *VERY* bad for NS2 to be built on an engine that only 5% or less of people will be able to enjoy due to hardware constraints.

No, sorry. That's not solid, given the fact that we're talking about the latest graphics engine available. NS2 will take at least a year or 2 to create, if you still have a 9600 by then, you're simply out of luck. Can't keep downsizing games for budget pieces of crap PCs.

HL2 was downsized to run on older machines, and look how it turned out. It uses probably less than 50% of my graphics card when I'm playing the game. Heck I wouldn't lose a SINGLE FRAME setting anti-aliasing to 8xSS. HL2 is completely outdated graphics-wise, and some fancy DX9 shaders aren't going to change that.

Ofcourse that isn't really an issue at the moment, but try and create a game that is already outdated graphics-wise. You'll end up with a very ugly game by 2006 standards.

Is there anything you don't understand about "The vast majority of the gaming population is on a low-to-medium budget computer, and it's not going to change in a couple of years"

Even if YOU will have a good computer, not everyone will enjoy the same quality as you, and even a large chunk of the population will keep their current computer for another two years. Gaming is for everyone, not just devoted gamers (something you don't seem to think possible)

    *sich*

Why do people keep forgetting the development time? NS2 isn't going to be released next week! Can you PLEASE keep that in mind. Using an 'low-end' engine like HL2 now, will have disastrious results in 2 years, when NS2 has to cope with the newer games like Unreal3. Sure Doom3 is high-end for current hardware, but in 2 years it really won't be that bad.

We had the GeForce4 2 years ago. Now just slow down and look at how much faster hardware has become. Doom3 will absolutely be easely playable on 2006 hardware.
  • Cereal_KillRCereal_KillR Join Date: 2002-10-31 Member: 1837Members
I am not forgetting development time, in two years I will still have my current PC. As I said, I'm turning 18 so I have MUCH more important stuff to spend money on than computer parts. That doesn't mean I won't spend 25 bucks on a game and hope to have fun. Many people will think the same way as me.

"We" had the GeForce4 two years ago. I still had a GeForce2.

I think this went on for long enough. In case you hadn't noticed, which you apparently didn't, we're as focussed on Source as most in here. We're only pointing out that nothing's concrete until we are in the actual dev process. No need to work yourselves up over it.
