Feel Good Horror Movies
Urgh.
I've just through watching Ghost Ship, it was playing on tv and feeling under the weather, i watched it since it meant no effort. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Anyway, i'm not gonna go into that movie, on the whole it was pretty crappy, but had some cool deaths. But what is it with these damned feel good horror movies that keep coming out?
We have Ghost Ship which ends all happy with all the souls escaping the boat, blah blah blah (yeah, i know the bit in the ambulance too, but shut up) and all the pretty music and stuff. Jesus. This is a <i>horror</i> movie! It's supposed to be scary, not leave you feeling warm and fuzzy at the end.
And House On Haunted Hill (Urgh, the floating binliner ending) and Thirteen Ghosts, both end with "oh whoopee we survived and won" kind of endings (HoHH not so much, but it's still there). I'm sick of it.
When do we get to see the main protagonists die at the end and we get an unhappy ending? Is that too much to ask? Is it such a far cry from the likes of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers where the world is f***ed dispite the protagonist's best efforts? No, we get treated to this damned heartwarming ending.
If i actually paid to see movies, i'd be more ****, but still, half the time i just want my damned time back.

Horro movies that have anysort of goodness to them are rare.
Only movie I can think of where the protagonist's all die is Night of the Living Dead, and that's 37 years old.

Not much we can do about it, may as well just enjoy the ride.
Great film, great, if a little tense and sad, ending.
I think most of the 'Of The Dead' films have pretty pessimistic endings. I mean by the third film the world has been taken over by zombies, it ain't the happiest of times. People escape, sure, but they have nowhere to go in the world, except for an exotic island if I recall the ending of "Day of the Dead". "Land of the Dead" should hopefully be very good.
I watched "Resident Evil" for the first time last night, and while its pretty much a gung-ho kill millions of zombies action and gore fest, I was glad to see them get taken away at the end of it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
If you can class the "Alien" films as horror movies rather than scifi, then how about "Alien3"? First off, everyone but Ripley who survied "Aliens" gets instantly killed at the start, foolishly, but thats pretty darn tragic. I consider the start of "Alien3" to be the end of "Aliens". Secondly, at the end of the film all of the prisoners bar one are dead. Ripley is dead. Everyone is bloody dead. That alien killed about 25 people, I counted once. Best one of the lot in my opinion, far more gritty and scary than the rest, and its just so tragic.

SciFi and horror mix all the time, genres cross all the time, Romantic Comedys, Action Thrillers, and anything with "Epic" at the beginning of it have been around for ages.
It's a pretty open ending, but the implication is that they're screwed. They say they've only got a little fuel left.
Talking of sci-fi horror, Event Horizon doesn't have a happy ending IIRC.
Event Horizon did. It was all about redemption and stuff. Happy Ending, in the same vein as "The evil is still out there" happy ending.
The Exorcist, The Shining[Kinda], Night of the Living Dead[Original], Ju-On. That's all I can think off. As BadKarma said, The Thing has a "no hope" ending.
