ummmmmm are u guys dumb, am i the onlyone who sees this.
the reason u2k3 has so few people playing is becasue it has very few...if any... mods.
go play HL multiplayer and im talking about the old school HLDM, u might find 30 servers with like 90 people playing.
the reason HL has such a big fanbase is becasue of the obscene amount of mods, there are A LOT of mods in development for u2k3 and once they are released u2k3 will probably shoot up.
and plz dont tell me "HL has good netcode" that might work if we were arguing about Q3 engine. but the U2k3 engine has incredibly good netcode that rivals that of HL. not only that but you can also play custom maps without downloading them form a site.
and i would like to here one thing that the HL engine does that the u2k3 engine cant.

I am glad everyone is talking about u2k3, which just came out not too long ago. But need I remind you that HL came out November of 1998 I believe(maybe 97' ... can never remember), and it is still the number one played game and considered the best FPS of all time for a reason. You cannot compare a game that came out a few months ago to this game. The HL engine is rather simple and concise. Sure it is being outdated by better mods, but nothing can really compare to it.
A nice little saying that you can replace HL with "He".
He might not be the biggest and definitely not the strongest fighter out there... but he can still pack a punch like nobody else!
I've always preferred epics unreal games over the quake/quake engine based games, I actually found Unreal to be more fun in single player than HL. HL seemed so scripted, like it ishe exact same thing every time you played through it, the maps arenear, not much to explore.
I don't even have UT2003 though, and I don't want to buy it... yet. Cause my PC (1.2 Ghz Athlon + GeForce 2) just can't run it as fast as I would demand. If you are forced to reduce the graphics details then what's the point in buying the game for it's looks? Perhaps I'll buy unreal 2, FPS ain't quite as important in singleplayer games as in multiplayer ones.

If you like to explore, try Operation Flashpoint. Huge outdoor maps, and if you're not careful it's easy to get lost at higher difficulty levels. That engine would be unsuitable for NS though. Deus Ex, also a game with big maps and lots of paths would be better, but that's basically a modified Unreal engine. Thief engine would be great for the aliens, but I don't think they support modding and the company went down.
I wonder why they didn't just use GLQuake. All code is available, might make it easier for cheaters, but also easier to alter stuff when the mod needs it. Or even the Aliens vs. Predator engine, also open source but witha limited license.

Same thing was said about UT... And most UT players are still in standard game modes. Original Unreal Tournament doesn't have upwards of 6 million copies in circulation. Unreal Tournament 2003 won't have upwards of 6 million copies in circulation, at least not within the next couple years.
actually i think their best bet would be to do something that was mentioned before.
where they hire another team to do the u2k3 version of NS, this way they would have both versions being worked on simaltaniously and everyone would be happey

Anyway, my 2 pennies.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> No, HL is a modified Quake ONE. Not quake II, quake I.
Every time something new is released, someone says, in EVERY mod I follow, "Convert to the new Unreal Engine! Convert to the new Doom 3 engine! Convert to the Quake III engine" (yeah, I've heard that... lmao.)
People, just because these games are pretty, does not mean the mod would automatically be good on it. The code would have to be completely re-done because mods for HL are done in C, and as such, very few permanent limitations. While engines like the Unreal engine (UT, UT2003,U2) and ones that use it use Unreal Script, which limits what you can do.
UT2003 is designed for Deathmatch and the likes, not for things like Natural Selection.
I hate the Q3 and UT2K3 engines feel.. it seems as if theres no locational targeting and models don't walk.. they slide. HL has a much better real, solid feel to it.
I think their best bet is to work on this HL version for now. If possible, they could get with Valve or id and negotiate to remake NS on their next game set for release. I wouldnt count on HL2/TF2 to get released. HL2 isnt even listed on the valve project page yet and the official TF2 site hasnt had any news posts since january 2001. Unless Valve doesnt like publicity all of a sudden, I would bet that those 2 games are never going to get released.
I would go with doom3. That game looks seriously spooky, which would be great for NS. Right now, NS still doesnt get you personally involved as the lighting and models and textures are poor compared with current games. I played through NOLF 2 and I felt like I was actually sneaking around in a crazy 60s spy movie. The models in NOFL are almost lifelike (except for the strange hair) and the lighting plays of the map realisticaly.
If I could feel like I was going through an abandoned space ship fighting horrible aliens I would wet myself.
I knew it! NS for TF2 will rock! Or should I say TF2 for NS? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Have any of you compared the feature set of TF2 and NS? Let's see: Commander mode: check Teamwork dominant factor: check Slower pace of game (more strategy): check Voice chat: check Volumetric flame thrower: "If we can do it" for NS, promised for TF2 Multiple structures per builder class: check Volumetric fog: check
Missing: Squad leaders (Haven't seen any comments about this by NS devteam) Medic that can revive/heal/resupply teamates (apparently a possiblility in later version of NS) Engine upgrades (well duh, they can't change that!)
So when are we going to hear that Flayra (and the rest of the NS team) is being hired by VALVe?
Actually, Greedo, I only own two copies of Half-Life <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
I think if there were to be an NS 2, it should be an original game. Yeah, you heard me, it shouldn't be a mod. And you know what would be neat? If it was just a new engine that connected to the same NS servers. The NS mod and server code could be modified in a patch release to support the NS 2 players. Yeah, you heard me, a new game that uses the same multiplayer system, so all you would get was insanely cool graphics and an improved interface while playing with the same community.
Yeah, you heard me.
That's my idea.
[EDIT] And then it could have a single-player mode! Yeah, you heard me.
