Asus 9800xt Versus Ati 9800xt?

Any difference?
So I'm currently sitting on a 9700 pro, and with the debut half life 2 and vampire: bloodlines, I've seen my frame rates drop to rates which I simply can't appreciate. Naturally, I'm looking at a good card for under $300 that I can shove into my system (p4 2.4ghz, gig of pc2100 ram, 400w power supply), and lo and behold on i happen to see an asus 9800xt going for $250. My question however, since I see built by ati 9800xt's going for upwards of $300 by auction's end, is if this product is somehow inferior through design to the ati one, or if there's something else I might be missing out on. Hell, if you even know of a BETTER card than the 9800xt I can spend my money on without going over the $300 mark, lay it on me!

Sincerely appreciated!

if you have a 9700 pro, I'm surprised you're thinking about upgrading... I'm happy w/ my 9600 pro's performance in HL2... sure, I can't max the settings, but on medium settings I get 60fps easy... if I were you I'd wait for the next generation of cards, but if you're swimming in money, go for it...

as for the difference between the Asus and ATI versions - no clue

The releases don't go in order, check out this page.

http://www.ati.com/products/gamer.html

You can see their product range from top end to low end.

My card is about 4 releases behind yours.

Er, ATI produce actual cards? I thought they only developed the technology and let other companies produce them.
• xioutlawixxioutlawix Join Date: 2002-11-05 Member: 7118Members, Constellation
Nope. Sapphire for example would be an example of such a case, but there are cards that specifically tout the 'built by ati' logo.

Mine is a Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9600XT. Are there any real difference between performance on cards depending on who made them? Apart from looks and cooling, it's the same technology and metal and plastic is generally pretty alike no matter who put it together.

There tend to be differences in some cases, and none in others. The most you can do is check up on some of the reviews from sites like anandtech and tomshardware for benchmarking comparisons. Sure, the chip is the same, but that's about as far as it goes, and yes, I myself have fun into some SUBSTANTIAL differences with both ati and nvidia cards.

Nope thats nVidia's way.

There is no real big performance difference between the Asus Radeon 9800XT and ATi Radeon 9800XT.

But the Asus Radeon 9800XT has the superior cooling system so overclocking with it is a breeze. So you can push it harder than the "Built By ATi" version.

Also if you are lucky you can try to find a much less expensive Asus Radeon 9800 PRO 256MB or ATi Radeon 9800 PRO 256MB and flash it's BIOS to that of a Radeon 9800XT. It's a steal, buy a card significantly less expensive end get a second generation High-End card.

Built by Ati is recognized by this logo on the package

Partner products can be identufied with these logos

Powered/Graphics by Ati

I think the differance in these to products is that with an Ati card you only get the card and the driver cdrom. If you get a card from a partner you'll probably get bundled software which includes 1 or 2 full games and some demos. but this is different for each manufacturer

New update, someone on another forum actually said that I'd be doing myself a disservice getting the 9800xt right now, when the nvidia 6600gt will only run me about $200.00, and it performs better in every single way.
Anyone able to confirm this?
I'm also concerned about how anything nvidia will run in anything valve-made given their seemingly unscrupulous partnership with ati.

Edit - Looking at anandtech, it seems the 6600gt DOES outperform the 9800xt, and for less money on average.

Yeah it does, but you gave no indication that you wanted an nVidia Videocard.
XD

If possible try to lookout for a Vanilla version of the Radeon X800 XT (non-PE).
I think it runs a bit more over 300$.
And I think I remembered a X700 series comming out on AGP.

I personally have absolutely no brand loyalty, and will switch back and forth as needed. I just want a card which is reliable and performs well. If that should be ati one day and nvidia the next, that's fine with me.

Going with the 6600gt, anyone have any recommendation of brand that'd be good? I personally will NOT buy anything PNY, due to past experiences with their boards.

Just to through my 2 cents in. In reference to ATI cards I've always been biased towards Built By ATI for no particular reason.

Well "Built By ATi" card tend go sell for 20-30$ more expensive then their Third-Party counterparts. I myself have a card built by ASUS and I am satisfied with it.

If you do go third party with ATi chipsets go for ASUS, ABIT and MSI.
I hear to many bad comments about Sapphire and Powercolor.

Powercolor perhaps but sapphire is the better card

Take my Sapphire 9800XT for example it has samsung 2.8 nanoseconds memory chips giving it more speed then any ASUS, ABIT and MSI which use the cheaper 3.2 nanoseconds chips. Also I havent had any problems with it and have it for more then a year now. It does however run a little hotter then the other brands but since I have a coolermaster case with good airflow maybe thats why mine is still alive today

See that card is good.

But Sapphire is often underhanded and devious to the n00b hardware buyer.
They try to sell of a Radeon 9800 with 128-bit Memory interfaces as "Radeon 9800 Pro" which is really misleading.

At one point I used to keep track of what cards are faster or stronger. Now its just a hassle. I don't think you are going to see much difference between one or another.
• EvoEvo Join Date: 2003-01-11 Member: 12180Members
1) A 9700 is generally still faster than a 9600, due to clock speeds, even though the 9600 is a newer core.

2) Most (if not all) ATI cards nowadays are actually built by Sapphire. My "Sapphire 9700 Pro", for example, claims to be an ATI branded card in sysinfo.

3) Generally speaking, there are no major differences between an ATI/Sapphire card and other third party manufacturers. They all use the same reference board, so the only differences will be trivial (bundled software, etc) or extra features (TV in/out, DVI, etc).

Cheers!

Being an owner of an Asus radeon 9800 (Not going to bother metioning pro or XT, they are actually identical cards, just dig bioses). I can say that the cooling thing for it, while It looks nice, is a POS. First of all, the color of the thing is very misleading, it isn't copper. Or well, on the whole it isn't copper. Only the fins are, the part that actually touches the core/ram is like some kind of orange aluminum. Also, the piece isn't smooth at all, the part that is touching the core and ram, while it should be as smooth as possible, is absolutly rough. Now onto the fans, they are incredibly loud, and barely push air at all. But besides the cooler, this card rocks. I highly suggest you get it. Then just drop in the money for a better cooler, and you are on your way. One last thing, buy the pro version of this card, less money then the XT, and you can spend less then 5 minutes flashing the bios and instantly have the XT.

Not entirely true since the 9800XT board does have an optimised layout, its actually an optimised version of the 9800pro resulting in running more stable on higher clock speeds then a 9800pro. Other then that there are no major differances.

But it is definately possible to get a 9800pro to run at 9800XT speeds. Heck if you volt mod a 9700pro and get some VERY good cooling you can even get the 9700pro to run faster then a 9800XT

While that is true with the ATI built ones and perhaps the ones by diffrent companies, the most recent (Ill explain later) 9800pros they have been putting out are the exact same card as the XT. As I've heard, the story goes that asus had an overstock of XTs, because the pull for pros was much stronger. So to save time they just manufactured the exact same, then just changed bios depending on what people wanted. Also my last bit of proof for this, is the boards are marked "A9800" asus 9800, dosen't specify Xt or Pro.

Way to remove the BIOS flashing which I had mentioned and recommended on the very same post that you just quoted.

I also like how you don't specify which version you have, you ashamed you bought a 9800XT before knowing you can flash the BIOS of a 9800PRO to get the same result ?

Okay the Asus card does not have as good a cooling system as I thought, but you're not going to tell me the "Built by ATi" card has a better cooling solution.

Even if it was not fully copper, an aluminium heatsink can dissipate heat just not as great a rate as copper, but in any case copper is not cheap.

Just to make sure you're not spending money that could be better wasted on other ventures (hint: send to me), are these frame rate slowdowns only in Half-Life 2 and Bloodlines? Those pauses (usually accompanied by sound skipping and sometimes occuring when you quick save or turn a corner) are plaguing a number of people. If you're actually getting legitimate frame rate slowdown, though, by all means upgrade. Send me your old card or something. Please?
