Cheating In Hl2? And Is The Game Crashing?
<div class="IPBDescription">Here's why.</div> I'll try to keep spoilers to a minimum, most of the top is just flab, containing examples of how i found this out:
Ok, by now im sure some of you have gone and done something like turning cheat mode on and typing in all the old commands for weapons and such. Well, they work... Sometimes. Sometimes, all too well. In this thread i'll outline the hazzards of cheating in HL2... Well, actually, there's only one hazzard to cheating, and that's crashing the game.
Yes, that's right, <b>if you cheat in HL2 you can cause the game to crash</b>. And it probably wont save your game status, either.
As we all know, there are some locations and times where scripted events occur. Now, most of the time it doesn't need to be worried about when you're cheating; the game won't notice if you have all your weapons via the old command. However, the game DOES notice if there is a missing actor to perform the script. This can become visibly noticable if you start a new game, get all the weapons via the old cheat code (what? did you think i'd tell you the EXACT code when you might not be finished the game and might not rember the old code? HA!) and if you shoot the Combine soldier who pushes the man into the luggage BEFORE (as in not after; key part) he shoves him, the man will become "jittery" and rotate back and forth.
As you go throughout the fenced-up area with the multitudes of combine soldiers, take them all out and smoke the camera (make it retract) with a weapon before you step into the little area, as well as the other Combine soldiers on the other side. Hey, looky-there! the fenced door didn't close! ... Go and explore this now "opened" area. Not much there, because the player was never meant to get into the area. Of course, the door on the wall opens with a combine soldier there. Note your weapon's reaction. Seem familliar? When the door to the bloodied room with the red chair opens, smoke the guard to your left. (or the gaurd that doesn't make your weapon react the way it did earlier) The ENTIRE scene freezes. The combine soldier doesn't close the door, and none of the other special scripted sequences play (you wont be able to continue the game, not without cheating more)
For a more serious, game crashing scripting error, make sure you never encounter Alyx. Do this by killing ALL the combine soldiers that have shock batons (the ones that matter, that whack you up good) by any means necessary. Bam. You never meet Alyx. You never pass through where you need to go. Just like you pressing a button; if you dont exist or if you can't reach it, how can you press the button? <i>You can't.</i> So the game doesn't go on, and no other actor can do anything else until that now non-existant actor does something. Sure, the button may be there, but <i>Alyx</i> has to press it! Not you!
Continue on with the game after you never meet Alyx. Old cheaters will know how to get to where they need to go, the only way cheaters do. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> Once you do that, and as soon as the Actor starts speaking, the game crashes. Actors that dont exist can't speak, but apparently the game doesn't know that, so it locks into a <b>infinate</b> loop. On top of that, there are multiple scripted sequences that require Alyx to exist in the game. Without her, im quite sure the game would crash <b>multiple</b> times.
<u>Final words:</u>
<b>Cheating can cause the removal of actors (Characters, NPC's, ect)
<u>Removing actors is a bad, bad idea.
<i>If you remove/kill/block a critical (read: scripted) actor, YOUR GAME WILL BE <span style='color:red'>SCREWED OVER</span></i></u></b>
That is all.
