Hl2 In Offline Mode, In Case Steam Dies Again

<div class="IPBDescription">FAO DOOManiac in particular</div> When Steam died last night there were a lot of angry people kicking around #ns, since they couldn't play HL2 without it. I could start it just fine in offline mode from my desktop shortcut, but for some reason some people (e.g. DOOM) didn't have a shortcut to use.

Here then is my shortcut, note that you'll need to edit it to point at the correct directory for both the "target" and "start in" boxes, simply replace "insertpathhere" with the correct path. For example "C:\Games\Steam\"

Chances are Steam won't have the same problems it had last night for a while (maybe Saturday when alll the people who had to wait til the weekend to play HL" try installing it), but you never know when this'll be needed. Hope it helps some of you.

...

well okay. guess I can't upload lnk files. Here's a screenie instead - just create a new shortcut and enter the necessary fields, as shown in the shot below:

Running in offline mode is easy. What people are worried about is the authentication that takes place when you install, and what will happen if you don't have the internet or Steam for that.

I never could get it to work, but I'll unplug my interweb connection and try again tonight.

    Thanks. :)

P.S. The reason for no icons is cause I bought it over Steam, and thus no Installer.

Couldn't you just right-click on it in my games and hit add icon to desktop?

Not when you can't get to the My Games menu because Steam is down...

I didn't realise you can do this - that'll be a better way to get yourself a shortcut.
