I'd give it a higher rating if the game could pull me in. Just when you start to get into the story you either get seperated from the group or they suddenly all die. Doom 3 is probably the only game that pulled you into the game and wouldn't let go. That is if you let it. (Lights off, Sound Cranked, No disturbances} I'm not floored by the graphics in the least. I mean It's pretty at times but it's not like HOLY CRAP THIS IS AMAZING. I mean the first time I played Doom 3 and it showed off it's tech I was like. Ok that's really damned cool. The only thing I thought was cool about HL2 tech wise was the physics. They were well done but making us do stupid puzzles and then Ravnholm? If I ever saw a tech demo level for physics that place is it.

The only part which was boring to me was the airboat, holy ****, that part was SO long.
Actually, after the end I kind of wanted to throw the g-man off the train with the g-gun, but that's just me.
Doom 3 sucked you in? I played it in pitch black with 7.1 speakers with all settings maxed and that game still didn't manage to suck me in, or even startle me. It was, how can I put this, boring once the initial shock value of "OMg ITZ D3wM wit 73h 1337 GRAPGIXZ!!!!111" wore off. Console survival horror and Doom gameplay plus technological limitations do not mix. One monster after another, same kind, over and over. No suspense, just fire away with your huge stockpile of ammo.
If any game managed to completely immerse me in recent memory, it was Halo 2. They said they wanted to make the gameplay and the story the same thing, and they suceeded. This may just be because I <3 the Halo story.
Oh yea, HL2 can range from very, very immersive (Ravenholm) to boring (...can't think of a level).

HL2 had interesting scenarios and fun combat. Doom 3 had things popping out right in front of you over and over (occasionally behind you! OMG WAT VARIETIE!!!11), whereas HL2 had amazing moments.
Did any of you who beat the game feel or felt bothered about the shortness of the game? Or were you actually fulfilled when you beat it, feeling like you actually had to work for the victory and spent a good amount of time at it, being challenged enough, etc.
I was rather disappointed with how short the game was. Seriously, I beat it in one day and I didn't even have to take a bathroom break. Still, it was fun.
The ending also **** me off. I wanted to kill the G-man...
That's what I was afraid of when I didn't pre-order like everyone else. I was afraid of a Doom3 repeat though from reading the threads, HL2 >> Doom3 by a lot. However, the gameplay and challenge is still lacking, sadly enough. I remember how hard Doom2 was to beat as a whole... ah the good ol' days of real challenge.

You're trying to call HL2 repetive? I don't really see any argument here, while Water Hazard was a bit drawn out, the fun I had on the level was worth it. It does a great job of giving you differant types of combat, (shooting combine, solving a puzzle, being attacked by a helicopter, swooping across water in an airboat)
Yes the physics engine is great fun, its not like the game only started getting fun once you got the gravity gun. I guess some people just can't stand agreeing with people and must argue for the sake of arguing.....
I Loved the atmosphere and story line, and am surprised Valve placed HL2 in the future in a oppressed city. (obviously a different setting then a underground top secret research facility)
from the moment you stepped off the train you knew the city was a powderkeg waiting to be set off, and you were the flame.
I don't want to talk more about it... you should see for yourself if you haven't.

Heh, try adding in the la la la la HEADCRABS, the rollers, (blue rolling things) the helicopters, gunships, striders, turrets, combine tanks, and snipers. All of that and I'm not even near the end of the game, and all of which were "major enemies". I think it's fairly obvious why you're going out of your way to bash the game...
(Sorry, I know its not really my place to edit posts but I figured some people might like to find details like that out for themselves, since I did ~Merkaba)
The ending is crap sorry it was let say that you dont know there is going to be a hl3 the neding tells you notihng to further the story about teh combine all you see is the big mother alien thing and some how these combine are liek xen aliens and there was some sort of deal but want to really get into this game live it!
I just beat it a few minutes ago. It was an amazing game. I have a few complaints, but they're all very minor. It gave you the feeling that you were there, what you were doing mattered, etc. etc.

That's true, but I remember back in the old days like Doom and Doom2, it actually took quite a big effort to beat the game on Hard Difficulty. Some of the map levels were HUGE with a load of baddies strategically placed, they didn't hold back at all when trying to challenge the players with the monster amounts and map difficulty.
Then again, I guess the advancement of the gaming engine and gaming graphics, it's probably a lot harder to create big maps like in the old days since they focus on quality instead of quantity.
