Carbon-copy cloned quests for every race, Carbon-copy clones of Carbon-copy cloned quests, overly-long level-up periods, lack of "excitement" in the early "build-up/level-up/grinding" levels (first 20) and general gameplay mechanic imballances makes WoW, in my own opinion, not worth a SINGLE CENT of my cash. First, i made a Troll Hunter, leather-worker and skinner. Fun at first, a little tedious running back and forth between areas, but still enjoyable. And then something happened. I dont know what or when, but all i know is that i was compelled to stop playing that character, and make a new one. A Dwarf.
Oh kay, winter wonderland right? Billowing clouds of snow atop a mountain in the perpetual winter, right?
Nope.
Not a single bloody flake of falling snow, ANYWHERE. I eventually found a quest that was different from the so-far carbon-copy ones, where i had to run a mug up to a NPC before it cooled off. THAT was fun, but once it was over, that something snapped once again, and i made another character. A Human Mage. I made sure to delete that character.
Went around, casting spells, and realized that i could whack things with even the simplest of attacks and kill them nearly outright. Once more, multitudes of carbon-copy quests of "gather item 'x' from monster 'y'" and "Go there. Then kill them. Then come back. Tell me, then i'll give you another one."
And then something weird happened. WoW slowed down for me. It slowed down to the point where it was nearly at a crawl, not in real-time, but in game time. Completing quests, getting from point A to point B, even killing a monster seemed to have been put to a slow-motion device that had been cranked up to maximum power. My often chaotic brain wasn't helping, either, as i mixed up compass directions usually inverting them costing me game time. It slowed so much that it froze in place, and thusly, was shattered with the typing of "delete".
My latest character is a unde... wait, scratch that, FORSAKEN Warlock Alchemist/Herbalist who's level 6. Yet more clone-quests of 'kill x and gather y'. Ran into the forsaken NPC by the first town's gate, who attacks you. For a brief moment something was repaired within me; that repair didn't hold the weight of the enemy's dead body, nor the weight of my broken hopes. I thought i was going to encounter epic quests possible by even a single hand. I thought i was going to be fighting Orcs or Humans every in-game meter and yard. I even thought death was going to be interesting.
I even thought death was going to be interesting.
So, who's going to type 'delete' on this? I probably will, most likely.
And no, you cannot have my key; i dont want YOU to be submitted to the horror of this.
PS: It's been a week, or just about. I have my right to complain and speak my mind, so dont bother pointing it out to me. <_<
[Edit - Guess correctly about what i meant by 'broke' and you get a cookie (and you can't say "your hopes" because i already pointed that out). ]

Comments
but thats your opinion and not everyone likes WOW
And raids are amazingly fun
"TO THE BRIDGE! FALL BACK!"
"They're coming at us from both sides!!"
much fun.

Yeah, what level, how much time did you put into it, which race, and how many kills/quests?
Kills in the raid? I don't know. I just healed, fired, knocked, and tore whatever was near me.
edit: I've been in 2 raids and defended local territory on a few occasions
edit2: I'm now level 15
Once you get into the non noob levels, try grouping up, it makes quests go lots faster.
Btw, the first 20 levels or so are only the first week or 2... And it's not supposed to be easy, it's supposed to take a long time. I'd be willing to bet from your general lack of want to play very far that you are one of those people who plays games on the easy setting...
In the first stress test, I was an undead mage, now I am a Tauren Druid. The beginner quests are so completly different. Sure, there are some similar ones, but what do you expect?
If you work with other people, rather than being a loner, it might me a little more enjoyable for you. It's online with other people for a reason you know.
I might be inclined to agree with you if this was Baulders Gate or Everwinter Night we were talking about, but by definition MMO games give the same experiance for nearly every player to get them working together for the greater good and what not. Otherwize why bother with multi player at all?
I'm playing with orcs, trolls, and undead next to myself and other Tauren all the time.
If you're talking about horde vs alliance
gnomes dwarves and night elves show up rather often. I haven't seen any humans yet but I caught word of one down south before I logged off for the night.
You'd sincerely rather it was a lot of fun in the first few levels, then boring and time consuming only once the game has already reeled you in and claimed your soul? That's how most MMORPGs do it; personally, I'd far prefer that the initial period of creating a new character was more boring than the later stages. If I've had the most fun I'm going to have right at the start, what the hell would I want to keep playing it for?

Hey, what do you care about me? All I do, from your perspective, is spew out text onto the NS off topic forums. No need to look out for my best interests; if I want to inflict horror upon myself, that's my fault. Give me the key.
I've not played WoW so my comments are going to be about generic MMOs here rather than WoW itself...
First off the 'carbon clone' thing and 'interaction'. Why? If you gave the races different but opposing missions (tailor made) then you'd get a heck of a lot of interaction. Even members on the same side could have to try and get the item before you do; it'd certainly cut the monotony of the 'routine' most quests in games turn into. A little chaos added by other players can spice up a boring quest =3
You could even have quests that intertwine; like say dwarves had to fix a bridge or something while the night elves had a quest on the other side of that bridge; the bridge collapses every so often so if it's not been done when a night elf gets it they either have to ask a dwarf for help, hope one comes along or just go the long way around. Either way the path to completion is now uncertain thanks to human factors... that's what MMOs should be about. Not grinding, not cut 'n paste quests but the involvement of people and their effects on one another and the world =P
someone sent me a video to watch of a hi octane battle scene, it just looked stupid, i mean all these people running about, and all these people casting spells and all sorts of random crap happening, it looked like a firework display
anyway iam gonna try it out for the free monthly period, make up my mind then
if i dont like it, ill give someone here my copy,
oh, and to address a few arguments off the bat:
Games are suposed to be fun when you play them NOT WORK. that is fun all the time, not only fun after putting in 2 weeks of play time, not only fun for the first 2 weeks. they are supoed to be FUN!
As for me, I don't like WoW, and I am a huge MMO person.
However I rate MMO's on how they solve the clasic problems.
so here is my run down.
Clasic problems and how WoW Dealt with them:
1) the Platoue (aka, you hit a point where it takes a very long time to level)
It starts around level 15, and just takes longer as you go. (remember, I work a full time job, so I can't play 24/7)
2) Camping.
Still there. Hunting uniques just sucks. Low level quests suck even harder. They need more instanced quests.
3) Downtime.
FIXED WONDERFULY!
and then broken again.
Their HP/Mana regen system (it regens stupidly quick out of combat, and can be spead up) was genious!
Travel time is just wrong.
Same goes for having to wait for quests to compleatly fade in before you can take them (I read faster then they fade!)
4) TradeSkills
AMASING!
they did a realy great job on trade skills. Almost like a minigame
You start off making honstly useful items!
however you do eventualy hit a point where you can't level up your trade skill with out just pumping $$ into it (unless you are lucky and can find people to buy your items at cost)
5) Travel
covered in Downtime.
6) Death
well, it isn't anoying, so no real complaints (exept for having my whisp drop off the end of the world and not being able to get back on land and thus being compleatly screwed)
7) Grind and getting sammey
the small # of skills was a bad idea.
Most classes have about 5 skills (and that includes mages) for a long time. Instead of giving up new toys, they just make us pay for our current toys to still be viable. This was one of the worst things they did.
The worst thing they did is still their quests.
kill x many baddies, return, repeate, repeate, repeate, go over there, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, go there, kill, kill etc etc etc etc.
I am spoiled by CoH and AO. Instanced missions are the way to make thigns fun and not get sammey so fast.
Combine that with the lack of a quest compass and I am sad.
Finding NPCs/specific mobs/ specific caves, etc is just anoying.
xxxx NPC is in xxx area. ACTUALY they are about 10 feet away, and thus not close enugh to light up on your minimap!!!
Yes, I know you are suposed to be exploring, however it generaly just comes down to:
/1 ok I give up, where the heck is xxxxx
soem one tells you the directions that some one else gave them when they asked and repeate.
as I said. wow did NOT fix enugh of the traditional MMO problems to be fun.
I think I might reactivate CoH, though it has alot of problems, atleast they fixed te quest/camping problem (mostly)
And raids are amazingly fun
"TO THE BRIDGE! FALL BACK!"
"They're coming at us from both sides!!"
much fun.

Play a Rogue, shut your mouth. No, seriously, their fun the entire game, from 1+. I love mine
...and yet I'm still playing it for some reason o.O
Guess I'm just looking forward to the market stalls you can open up anywhere you feel like, the extra haircuts and clothes that'll open up, the minigames, extra isles and extra classes ^^
Inspite of all that though Maple's just something to pass the time. It makes a nice chatroom if nothing else =3
Now Talesweaver... that'd probably be a good thing to compare stuff with =o
Oh and than, CoH added 'epic' pools for high level chars. So now you get scrappes throwing web grenades and controllers with blast powers and stuff
Still, I'm not resubscribing. Too much hastle for too little change just yet ^^
and questing in this game is the same thing as grinding in other games
and i didnt know MMORPGs were all made differently
Once you get into the non noob levels, try grouping up, it makes quests go lots faster.

I dunno . . .
I am aware of the different mechanics of the various MMORPGS but, for instance, Diablo (PUAHAHAHAHA), is maaaaad boring and tedious and insanity inducing.
obviously these games draw a lot of people and indeed you may decide to use this as a basis for deriding the rest of us as somehow unenlightened and maldeveloped but I rather think otherwise. that is vice versa only. That is,
IT IS YOU TARDS WHO ARE FOOLISH BORING ROBOTS WHO WASTE YOUR LIVES ON THIS STUPID TEDIOUS CRAP
lol
EDIT
Although the rough broad differences in game approach might be good foundation for a psychological study.
I like challenges but only when I can apply my skill and ability; only when I can approach beneficially with energy and excitement and enthusiasm. It is true that there are games that I would not bother to play because of their difficulty, and that is because of their tedious constrainedness and lack of point and reward.
To me the teamwork boost of Natural Selection or more loosely, Unreal Tournament (as in, my tribe vs other tribe) is better than the teamwork boost of the MMORPGS because of the nature of the game. MMORPGS are slow and moronic. NS and UT and the like are vastly more exciting, and take skill and brain application.
My brain is bored in MMORPGS, and it should not be
I haven't PvPed yet because i would have to:
1) Be at least level 15/20 if i wanted to live long enough
2) Get some levels
3) Spend 30 minutes or more of continual walking towards a enemy position
And even then PvP would last like what?
Five seconds?
My level 20 against someone who's probably three times that?

Damn strait.
TBH, after some thinking time, i've finally figured out why the hell so many MMOs have the "Grind to level 'x' then you get some really nice s***!"
Money.
Level-grinding is a real-life time-sink game designers and companies use to make sure they suck as much time - therefore money - from you as possible. What's the point of giving them everything within three days when you can slowly give it out to them over three months? $15 US per month for a total of $45 US, and that'd probably be only to level 30-45. So in the end, the company sucks out $100 from your pocket, leaving you after a extensive time something with very little left to offer you; when, in fact, you could get the same thing from a FPS.
So much for PvP.
keep on giving you new stuff.
CoH did this to some extent, you did keep on getting new stuff to play with, however they needed a large range of things, and they have started to do that now.
one of these days I will become stupidly rich and hire a dev team to make my ultimate mmo
or possibly a lot of MMOs
take WoW's health regen system
CoH's combat (tweaked a little bit more ofcourse)
AO/CoH's mission system
WoW's amasing world
etc etc
Or that.
I meant given a choice between the two. Like, say, a game had a fairly steep learning curve but it's worth getting over. I've got no problems at all if a game wants to be consistently good right from the start. I'd just prefer a game was slow to get going but excellent later on than "ooh shiney!" at the beginning (while the novelty hasn't worn off) and then only meh after you've gotten deeply into it.
