I'm Moving To Canada
Well, word just came down from my project that I am going to be going to Canada for an installation. I don't know where I will be in Canada yet, but I should be there for a few months at least. Once I figure out where I will be going I will post the information here.
I'll probably need information about what to do in the local area and things to do. Hopefully I will be near a metropolitan area and not stuck on some base north of the arctic circle.

Nah that's our Gaithersburg facility. It is the primary manufacturer of government grade tape. They recently retooled and now only produce the red variant but what is produced is the highest grade imaginable.

Oh noes! He found out about CFS Alert! The closest major Canadian city is (strangely) Edmonton (at 3475km), but its actuall closer to Stockholm (3282km). Oh, and its the most northern inhabited place on the planet.
As long as you don't end up there you should be fine. Although its quite a crappy time of year to move, since, depending on where you move to, you may have just missed any hope of seeing warm weather until May.

I'm not worried about the weather. In my area we have 2 seasons.
Freaking hot. and Damned cold.
Right now it is 35 degrees F and pouring rain. It is snowing a few miles north.
Damned cold is below freezing and 80-100% humidity.
Similar to how in the desert it can be hot but without the humidity you can feel comfortable wearing slacks. Here we often have 80-100% humidity due to the geographic nature. It exacerbates any cold weather because not only are you cold, but you feel wet.
(Used to camp out in -20 degree weather but it was dry so it didn't feel this bad)
Besides, I used to live at 7000 feet ASL in Colorado. I still say that where I am now has nastier winters.

If your in the interiour, don't expect any change in the weather from what you are used to. If you end up in vancouver how ever, your choices are: warm rain, cold rain.

People live in alaska and the northern canadian territories you know.
(double post to spilt up quotes)
I don't know what it is with this region but it acts like a funnel for clouds. We are even cloudier than seattle. But just this little 30-40 mile area.
Here we go:
This are monthly averages starting on January.
Humidity:(%) 75 74 73 72 76 78 79 82 84 84 79 76
Cloudy days: 24 24 23 23 24 23 23 22 20 20 24 23
In other words: 78% of the time if you look outside, you will not see the sun.
Bush wins the election and Wizard just so happens to immediately move to Canada?
Anyone else smell a closet commie?

October-Feburary is the worst time to be in Britain. It gets dark around 4:30pm, and it's usually grey. So very, very grey.

Yeah I am a bit thankful that the snow starts 80 miles north.
I wanted to post that picture to show you what 78% of the days look like in Cville. That picture was taken at noon.
So are these moves long enough to actually cart belongings along with you, or are you living out of a suitcase for the forseeable future?

That is the big question.
I am hoping for one extreme or the other. I do not want to do some sort of 6 week deployment that is just a bit much for a suitcase but too short for a U-haul.

And, more importantly, do you get housing off of their dime or do you have to cover that yourself?
The former could be nice-- I have a friend who has worked as a traveling auditor for GE since we graduated college (eight years ago, now . . . *gulp*). He hasn't spent a dime on housing in that time, and has saved a ridiculous amount of money.
Hopefully you'll be in the same boat . . .
I don't think an ethiopian with the munchies could consistently eat $50 bucks worth of food a day, unless your hitting up pricey restaurants
That's a pretty good deal, so where are you moving exactly? I have a Traveler's Guide to Canada and I can type some of the places up for you.

I still don't know yet.
The 50 dollars is in cash so I don't have to spend it on food if I don't want to. (hopefully it doesn't become $50 canadian )
Excellent . . . enjoy the ride, and hopefully their largesse makes up for the associated inconvenience.
And, one word:
