I'm Moving To Canada

TheWizardTheWizard Join Date: 2002-12-11 Member: 10553Members, Constellation
Well, word just came down from my project that I am going to be going to Canada for an installation. I don't know where I will be in Canada yet, but I should be there for a few months at least. Once I figure out where I will be going I will post the information here.

I'll probably need information about what to do in the local area and things to do. Hopefully I will be near a metropolitan area and not stuck on some base north of the arctic circle.

I heard that they created a gulag up there years ago, isolated from society and its laws. Free from the roaming eyes of outrage, they whip the slaves to death and then harvest their organs, creating unspeakable horrors in the name of the shareholder.

    Good luck!

Nah that's our Gaithersburg facility. It is the primary manufacturer of government grade tape. They recently retooled and now only produce the red variant but what is produced is the highest grade imaginable.

Only the red varient? Only the red varient?! Slackers! When I was held in the gulag, back in the day, we had standards. Timmy, John, Dave, Steve, Little Ronny, Big Jim, Edna, Dave II, Big Dave, Short Dave, Jon, Tom, Edward, Robert, Bobby and many more of the people I came to love would work and die to make as much tape as possible, and not just red tape, dammit!

Eheh don't worry about Britain. We have such lax security you can escape from any prison camp with a bed sheet,a cheese wire, and a ten pound note.

Oh noes! He found out about CFS Alert! The closest major Canadian city is (strangely) Edmonton (at 3475km), but its actuall closer to Stockholm (3282km). Oh, and its the most northern inhabited place on the planet.

As long as you don't end up there you should be fine. Although its quite a crappy time of year to move, since, depending on where you move to, you may have just missed any hope of seeing warm weather until May.

I'm not worried about the weather. In my area we have 2 seasons.

    Freaking hot. and Damned cold.

Right now it is 35 degrees F and pouring rain. It is snowing a few miles north.

When are you coming and how cold is "damned cold"?

Damned cold is below freezing and 80-100% humidity.

Similar to how in the desert it can be hot but without the humidity you can feel comfortable wearing slacks. Here we often have 80-100% humidity due to the geographic nature. It exacerbates any cold weather because not only are you cold, but you feel wet.

(Used to camp out in -20 degree weather but it was dry so it didn't feel this bad)

Besides, I used to live at 7000 feet ASL in Colorado. I still say that where I am now has nastier winters.

Which reminds me. I was just about to post the other day that I finally saw the sun again after a 2 month period of complete overcast skies.

I don't know what it is with this region but it acts like a funnel for clouds. We are even cloudier than seattle. But just this little 30-40 mile area.

    Here we go:

This are monthly averages starting on January.

    Humidity:(%) 75 74 73 72 76 78 79 82 84 84 79 76

    Cloudy days: 24 24 23 23 24 23 23 22 20 20 24 23

In other words: 78% of the time if you look outside, you will not see the sun.

And in Victoria your choices are - warm rain (well, if 25-35C in the Summer is merely warm :\), cold rain, freezing rain, and last but not least, snow-rain, which absolutely no one can drive in, play in, or do anything in! Yay Vancouver Island! Yay Victoria!

Don't come over to Britain yet, Wizard. We didn't know you were coming, so it's a bit of a mess.

October-Feburary is the worst time to be in Britain. It gets dark around 4:30pm, and it's usually grey. So very, very grey.

Yeah, at least we have two weeks of nice, mild weather in between the two extremes. You don't even look like you get that . . .

So are these moves long enough to actually cart belongings along with you, or are you living out of a suitcase for the forseeable future?

    That is the big question.

I am hoping for one extreme or the other. I do not want to do some sort of 6 week deployment that is just a bit much for a suitcase but too short for a U-haul.

And, more importantly, do you get housing off of their dime or do you have to cover that yourself?

The former could be nice-- I have a friend who has worked as a traveling auditor for GE since we graduated college (eight years ago, now . . . *gulp*). He hasn't spent a dime on housing in that time, and has saved a ridiculous amount of money.

Hopefully you'll be in the same boat . . .
