Actually I had a similar problem, although not critical what-so-ever. I wanted to get rid of the ANNOYING PAPERCLIP DUDE! And replace it with the CUTE but STILL ANNOYING CAT HELPER-THINGY. And then it wouldn't install, and I was like, "WTH?", and it was like "Please Insert Office Disc", and I was like "I don't have an Office disc" and it was like "Well you're screwed then!" and I was like "NooooooooOOOoooOOOooooo!"

Incidentally, find a computing forum or something and ask about it.

Contact your support personnel for assistance". YEAH OK I WILL RING UP YEAH YEAH GOOD ONE MICROSOFT!!

It's an open-source office suite that can do pretty much whatever MSOffice can, there is a few differences, obviously, but in general they are very similar.
Plus it is free.

And open source.

Hey, thanks.
Didn't know such things exist.

Will try it out.

(Oooh, it supports my native language. This should be good.)
• taboofirestaboofires Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9853Members
My guess is that you played with something like language packs, or type-as-you-talk extensions. Office will refuse to do anything until you put the install CD in. It's really annoying.

big question is tho.

will it open my half finished assignment?
• DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
I know it opens Word and Excel documents just fine, so chances are it'll open your powerpoint presentation too...

can't hurt to install it and find out.
• taboofirestaboofires Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9853Members
Your document is fine. Open it on another computer if you can't make yours happy (say, your install cd is 500 miles away).

Open Office eh?
Many open projects I know usually get shut down (not by some corporation suing them; I mean by lack of funds or willpower or something). Let's hope this doesn't go down the same road.
I'm downloading it right now, let's just wait and see.

Lack of funds? I take it you haven't heard of "open source"?

Open source projects, especially ones as high profile as OpenOffice, aren't likely to shut down so easily because anyone can work on them, usually with some core team being responsible for the "official" version. So if any of the members of the core team get tired of doing it, there are undoubtedly plenty ready to fill their shoes.

Anyway.

OpenOffice is ok. It's got a few irritating quirks (but then, so does Microsoft Office). It is occasionally unstable. The latest version might be better than the one I use, but my gut feeling is that StarOffice might be more reliable. That's Sun's word processing package, which they've released the older version of for free (apparently you have to do a bit of digging on their site to find it, but it's there).

youre running a half broken spywared windows with no installer service, and relying on it for your homework? hm.
Google: Fix Installer Service

openoffice sometimes has trouble with complicated formatting because microsoft uses a REALLY weird file format when it saves things, and with every new release the openoffice guys have to hack the new save routines to figure out how to read the files. especially with powerpoint, you might find it opens looking all screwey.

I'm really curious what the hell this error is supposed to be. Random errors like that frustrate me. Have you tried updating your copy of office at microsoft's official site by any chance?

I hate the office as well. I've got that fat chick next to me that never SUYF and eats so loud even hippos would be appalled. People these days.

I am still kinda shocked that some of you didn't knew Open Office, well that's the disadvantage of living in the mono Microsoft world.

Open Office is THE office suite for most popular Linux distributions, it's a part of it.

They also have binaries for Windows, i always keep it as backup if MSOffice has some problems... again...
