I can see you're making it from a box. I suggest learning how to do it poly-per-poly. It's much more poly efficient and more controllable. From what i see, there are more wasted polies than actual polies in use on your model. And the actual mesh looks very messy. Try to make it look more natural.

I'm not making it out of a box..... Im using the technique used the the dude on recently done VTM. (Where he makes the beretta)

Anyways, yeah, it looks messy ATM. Im going to be cleaning it up tonight

got something against box + extrusions??

kidding, poly per poly is better, IMO, if you have time. otherwise do box.
(just a general comment)

and it looks ok atm... but i dont like the poly wastage, there are too many co-planar ones (on the same plane) that could be welded together. Keep up the good work, though.

Once I have finished I will remove as many poly's that I dont need (Such as the gridded looking flat ones on the grip)

its in the tools menu all the way on the right (near the 5 tabs : shapes, utilities , hierearchy ,setup ... click the more button you should see polygon counter in there)

i hate to ask, but since this forum does have swear filters could you guys stop trying to use them, and type something that means the same thing? takes 5 seconds...

i would assume he said dodge this or there was no need to swearfilter dodge. Who cares whether you can guess what he was trying to say?

*Sigh*

Someone order a tactical nuke and aim it at windows HQ.

Ok, I leave my computer for 10 mins, come back to see it's done an update on windows and it has that fkn "5 mins before windows resets your computer thingy".....except I only have 6 second left...I dive for my computer but...too late! Windows proves it's useless again! And it resets itself!

Anyways, Once my computers loaded up again...I open the model......or do I?

GOOD GAME WINDOWS YOU HAVE SUCSESSFULLY CORRUPTED MY FILE AND MY 5 HOURS WORK BY RESETTING YOURSELF! I HOPE YOU GO TO HELL AND ROT PLEASE!

So, you get the idea, I lost all my work...

Luckily I'm in love with the walther p22 and I will be bothered to remake it...

It's kinda annoying though...cos I had just cleaned it up, and reduced the poly count (was 700) down to 500....
BUT GG WINDOWS IT DOESNT MATTER COS YOU SCREWED MY FILE UP ANYWAY!!!

Well I'll be remaking it tonight and tomorow so I'll get a new screenie up kinda soonish

I take it you haven't discovered the wonders of 3dsmax and autobackup. If you haven't started work on the new model yet, there is a good chance you won't have to. Under your 3dsmax folder is a autobak subfolder. In this folder, 3dsmax autosaves your work. Try checking first to see if any of those files contain your model.

3dsmax autosaves you know. They are saved in the folder "autobak". This is probably no use to you anymore since 3dsmax overwrites old backups, but in the future you may be able to save a corrupted model.

Okay I'm not hundred percent sure about this anymore. I have rarely had operating system boot while working in max, but max creates files named "<something>_recover.max" when it crashes and "autobak<number>.max" files which are autosaves. Atleast that's how it works for me :/
• BAshhBAshh Join Date: 2003-08-26 Member: 20222Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor

the autoback saves are just saved every few minutes it doesnt matter what you do in the program it makes 3 files and overrights the oldest one every time it autosaves

the recover file is when max crashs it says "3dsmax has encountered a critical error would you like to attempt to save" or something like that then when you click yes it trys to save and then closes max most of the time this feature works flawlessly
