Yeah, it's not designed to take HL2 around and install it illegally or anything, it's just a response to all the people who say "I ARM GOOEENG TO BY IT AT A STOAR BECUZ I NEEDZ A HARD COPEE!!1" because you can make your own hard copy if you want to and give Valve more money than Vivendi in the process.
So in other words 40 years from now when you want to show your grandkids what games were like in the good 'ol days HL2 STILL won't work because Valve went kaput and Steam can't verify anything becuase it doesn't exist?
Even if you buy a box copy, you will still need to have access to the internet to activate the game.
So it's really the lesser of the two evils. Either way, you're screwed if Steam go the way of the Dodo, and no patch were released for stand alone version.

Not quite sure how that would work - it was just in one of those threads at halflife2.net 'messages you recieved from valve!" threads.
Anyway, I bought the online version (...hooray for silver, I suppose), despite not having any media writing hardware (...unless I want to make about 2000 zip disks). Now I just need...an internet connection that the school isn't butchering by blocking basically every port. Hooray for a 900+ ping!
