3dsmax Gray Render Setups

<div class="IPBDescription">What do you use?</div> Well, I'm just wondering, in a short breakdown, what each of you use for you gray (untextured) model renders.

I always have that stock look, and it annoys the **** out of me. I've never been much of a light/render guy so I've never found a good setup. Hell, I'm still just learning to model.

Anyway, help would be nice. Thx.

    I just apply a default material (with the ambient colour changed to what i want) to my objects (I use white with a white bg colour, looks nicer imho) and throw in a skylight. Check the "cast shadows" box on in the skylight's properties and i use different amounts of rays for different renders. If i'm just doing a quick render i only use 5 rays (nice and quick to render) but if i'm doing a render to show off to people i use 15-20, which looks nice enough.

    Then you end up with a render like that. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    if you have 3dsmax, download VRay by Chaos Group.

    You can get pretty good renders with it once you know how to use it.

    thx esuna -- will look into that.

    Vee: i'm not too interested in high quality renders, and have had bad occurences when I start adding new renderer's on to max5. I might check it out at a later point tho, thx for the link.
