i think the main reson zombies rip people to bits in movies is because, well a movie where some voodoo man reanimates a cemetry full of corpses only for them to wall into macdonalds and que up in an orderly fasion is not exactly exiting

    On the rate of transformation

Well then again for both Dawn of the Dead type zombies and for Resident Evil type zombies it seems to depend on the nature of the exposure.

Take the man at the begining of DotD who gets bitten by that little girl right in his neck and in a vital blood route.

    He changes pretty quickly.

vs the young pregnant wife who gets scratched by a zombie and doesnt die for a long time later on. Vs the fat old lady (who gets th epoker through her eye) she was moderatly wounded from a deep bite on an extremety. And so she she at a delayed but still short time.

Resident Evil. Weve seen how fast people who have been super exposed to the T Virus can change.

Look at the character (forgot his name, the guy who stole the virus and gets killed by the licker monster by the train) in the first RE movie at the end he gets totaly exposed to the virus from al his wounds. He changes within minuets. Likewise Dr.Ahsford whos body was highly infected with the virus almost immediatly re animates after being shot and dying.

Compaire that too the all the people who who get bitten and then go through the slow process of getting weak, sicker, and then changing.

Similar results are taken from Max Brooks' "The Zombie Survival Guide".

On why they try to eat you

The Zombie Survival Guide states that zombies wil try to consume any living thing although for unknown reasons humans are prefered. it also states that zombies do not eat people for any food or "fuel for the body" do to the fact that the digestion system of a zombie doesnt work.

I cant find it anymore but I was reading the guide that was given to all the extras who played zombies in RE Apocalypse. It said something about how ombies wanted to occupy the same physical space as the living and so to do that they tried to eat the people so they could occupy the same space. it also taked about how a zombie would move they went into a couple pages describing a "liquid form" of movement. If you put your hand on an apporaching zombies forehead the rest of his body would keeping moving forward like thing happened etc.

    it was pretty interesting.

it went into more detail ill try to find it.

Haven't read all of peoples replies... But one thing that got me... Is how the hell they can *live* or whatever with half a neck missing? The guy at the start of DotD go his neck torn out by his little girl and then managed to reanimate. Muscles need oxygen to function properly. And without the oxygen supply they just collapse from exaustion and so he would have just fell over in about 3 minutes max.

Plus i'd think it would be something to do with Pheromones. ie. They don't eat the living - They can just smell their fear and whatnot. The dog wouldn't have the fear because it would just think they're normal humans. But the humans would have the fear of being eaten by one or whatever. Hence why the zombies would go for them.

Muscles don't need oxygen to function properly. Thats why there's such a thing as anaerobic respiration. Its NOT GOOD but it keeps them working.

As for zombies vs animals, I believe its just instinct, a dog is much more of a threat than a person at the basest level. You'd probably find zombies fear snakes and spiders too, as well as understanding the effects of gravity.

This Thread sooo rocks my bwraaaaaaiins!

Some of these posts makes pretty good sense to me - ofcourse we lack the virus in our present world so it wouldnt happen movie-like in the real world... yet <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Real zombies are just lobotomized people , either by a surgical operation or an "accident" (say a nasty voodoo ritual) ; they are deprived of their own will and will just do what they're told to. Of course , "zombifying" people equals murdering them.
