I think it has to. Looking at all the possibilities modern gaming has to offer, NS can't keep going with this 7 years old engine without being seen as past due.
Personnaly, i've played farcry, doom3, cs:source.... and when i play NS, the 1st thing that strikes me is it's old graphic and canned sound. There's gonna be hundreds of mods for HL 2 and NS can't hope surviving with this version. People will want to play games with realistic physics and great graphic. It's just the next step and NS will have to follow.
