Why Do We Exist?

Hardly an original question. It has existed since the dawn of mankind, much less this forum. Yet the question is still unanswered. Nothing can be proven, mind you. This is purely discussion. So just remember that while you are pounding on another guy's opinon.
So for those of you that believe in God, has it ever occured to you the question of why He created us? I mean surely there is some sort of purpose.
Did He create us to be worshipped?
Maybe He created us as a science experiment?
Maybe we are His midnight snack?
For those of you that don't believe in God, who created us then, if anyone? Do we even really exist? Perhaps we are some sort of product of a twisted madman's dream that when he wakes up, we'll all perish as quickly as we were formed.
To what extent do we exist?
And how can we tell?
What do you think?

That isn't really true, by definition then, the 'reason' we exist is BECAUSE we just happened to evolve. Just because something was done because of random chance, doesn't mean it was reasonless.
I'm sorry, I just had to do that.
Really there is no possible way to prove we exist at all. If I ask someone and they say I exist how do I know they are telling the truth? How can I prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that I can interact with stuff? The short answer is that we may or may not exist.
Now, if you go past that basic philosophical stuff you get to the fact that were just a highly strutted accident. We came into being because of the creation of DNA several billion years ago. Ever sense then we have just been improving on that DNA structure. We are the product of thousands of years of evolution.
edit: Wow, I just made the bigest mistake in the hisory of the universe. And when I mean big, I mean really, really big. ...
That's not why rocks or the universe exist.
That really only applies to living things and virii
Wrong. The answer is 42. We are here to find out what the question is.
Yes, the only person.
It takes 3 dimensions to describe space, a world...
It takes 2 dimensions to describe a shape, a design, a balance...
It takes 1 dimension to describe a line, a change, a unit...
It takes only one point to describe existance
And it takes nothing to describe infinite nothingness
Asking a question like why we exist as if there is some reason to it makes me want to laugh. Before I learned how to meditate I would have considered this a deep question but not I just find it to be a trivial, rather superficial question. More specifically this is so because their cannot be a rational answer. At least not one any lifeform could understand.
1=2? um no, not if those quantifying symbols are supposed to mean something different
1=3? no
1=4? no
1=5? I said no! lol
Existence is a wonderful thing. I believe God is nature is existence is God. We can ponder such things as infinity and existence and nothingness but we can't really understand it any more than what makes up the charms or photons or why the existance changes (we try to rationalize and call as an abstract quantifier: time). In what arrogance do lifeforms have to think we can ever fully understand existence and futhermore who says their is even a why to existance. Couldn't it be a it just is?

Machines didn't create us..... we created them, they turned on us (although Animatrix goes into more detail, it was humans fault they did really), we nuked the sky so they couldn't use sunlight, they said "fine" and captured us for use as a power source.
But.... we exist because we're the current peak of evolution in one sense, as we can mould our environment to match us, rather than dying out when the environment changes. Sure it affects the world in a bad way, but we recognise that too, and we're trying to deal with it. In short, we're 'ere because we're 'ere because we're 'ere.
From a religious point of view.... i dunno. Maybe god was bored and decided he wanted to create an entire world for fun, and torment it's inhabitants.
Lines are 2 dimensional, points are one dimensional, iirc.
Our minds are just not up to the challenge. A bird does not understand quantum physics, we do not know why we exist.

if you read my post carefully, i DO say that we created them, but then when they took over, they needed to "grow" more of us to keep themselves fueled.
as for the other stuff, who knows

You have a very VERY different definition of the word 'reason' then I do.

Couple of funny quotes off-hand about reasons for existing.
I really think God must have been bored off his rocker. Then one day, it hit him. Oh yeah! I can make universes! And so he makes us, and we are sort of his television set. Otherwise, I can't see any reason why he created us. It isn't like he depends on us for existance. It's like it would make more sense that God didn't exist at all.
Sort of an argument against God, wouldn't you say?
so we can question the nature of existence while existing ourselves
I prefer astral projection to existing anyday
(Edward) the whole point of existence is to be born live and die.
Then the entire process start's again
Because if we didn`t exist we wouldn`t have much to do......

No, x5 has it right. Although I disagree with his placement of 'unit'. A point is a unit, therefore it does not take one dimension to describe a unit.

The question is "What is six times nine?"
There we go. purpose served, we can all go home.
[serious:]
If all we are here to do is to reproduce, then all hte nuns, preists, homosexuals, celibates and old people are just a waste of space. They aren't going to reproduce, so get rid of them to make way for the people who will. Also, lets get rid of people who use contraceptives. They are, after all, interfering with our purpose. BABIES!!111!1
For those of you who think there is no purpose at all, what are you still doing alive? You are not going to accomplish anything that matters in the rest of your life, so you might as well just pop your clogs now.

I agree with you, though I have doubts that any lifeform can comprehend existance.
Just live your life to the fullest (Whether its fake or not ). And when the time comes for us to die we will realize we know absolutly nothing.

I was bored one day and decided to watch the Science Channel. Supposivly the entire Universe will be eaten up by 2 Super Massive Blackholes. I think the one is in our Milky Way Galaxy, I may be wrong since the last time I saw the show was a long time ago. But before that will even happen. Our Galaxy will collide with another. Also the CGI showed what it may look like, to me it looks beautfiful but of course once it hits I doubt the Earth will exist. If it does well lucky for the Planet.
But on to the BlackHoles, yeah two Super Massive BlackHoles are going to eat up the entire Universe. They said they ran simulations on how long it will take. Dont be afraid about that its only about 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 years into the future. Or One Gougle (Google) year.
They predicted that once these two blackholes start eating each other it will form one big one or something along that line. And adventually it will just disappear and then nothingness. So yeah thinking about how GIGANTIC the Universe is, it will become a pretty small place. Maybe its just its recycle phase and then life will spring back into action. Heck anything is possible.
You exist, congratulations. Publisher's clearinghouse will be coming soon with an oversized check. Now do something with your existance.
Which makes me think. What if everything IS a recycle? What if there was a civilization just like use, a couple of billion years ago. But then everything exploded, changed, got destroyed or whatever.
What if there is another planet, just like us, with people. Only in an other galaxy.
