I Need A General Idea.

I know in most posts like these I would be told to check out the other threads, but I have to leave for work in 5 mins, so I would prefer a thread to stock information while I'm gone if you don't mind.

I want to set up a server - dedicated. I just want 10 people really, for me that is a great amount.

However I only have one computer so I'm going to have to run the server while playing on the same machine (no background programs running). I have 1.8GHZ Pentium 4, 512 DDR RAM, and a highspeed connection with 3.0mb down/384kbps up. (kilobytes not bits)

Would this be able to support 10 players if I were to play on the same comp?
Laggless?

If what you're saying is true and thats really 384kilobytes up which equals 3Mbits up (more than anyone I've ever heard of having for a home connection) then you can easily have 10 players. We have 4 servers witha total of 70 slots, which uses up about 2.5Mb/sec when all full. Your limiting factor will be your CPU, I think you might be able to have a 16 player server with that, maybe slightly less.

i can host a 10 man server with 40 kbytes a second in upload speed without mass lag. and on a dual PIII 1000, 1 gb ram. you should be able to have a 16 player or 20 player server fine if you manage it correctly.

Well, I tested it, and when it reached 6 players ping jumped to 1000! I don't know what the hell that is about, and whenever I try to make a server non-dedicated it dosn't show up on the list, and when I turn the sv_lan to 0 it dosn't work, and when the map changes it goes back to 1.

How do I host a non dedicated server..?

I got the listen server up and working fine. Does anyone know if it will run better since it's non dedicated?

    uh...

Dedicated servers tend to run way better than listen servers. Otherwise why would people go to the work to code dedicated servers? I dono many(any) people who actually like playing on listen servers. They always seem more laggy to remote players and who likes getting kicked all over the map by someone with a ~4ms ping when everyone else is in the 300s..

Mebe I'm missing something here but I don't see any reason why using a listen server would make anything better. If anything listen servers make things(lag, playablilty and performance) worse.
