Considering Video Cards

As it stands right now, I'm sitting on an asus p4g8x deluxe motherboard (some pci slots, an agp 8x slot), a radeon 9700 pro, a gig of ram, and a p4 2.4ghz processor.
Naturally, what with Half Life 2 and other games coming out shortly, I'm considering purchasing a video card.
What I eventually want to do within the next coming years is slowly get ALL of my components upgraded, get a motherboard that's pci express compliant, get a 3.0+ ghz processor, faster ram, etc.

For now though, I think my current system will hold up well vs. the next generation games, its just that video card that I think needs some work.
I was honestly considering the x800 xt for a while, but my fear with that is the remainder of my system bottlenecking it and not achieving full performance.
So I'm also considering the 9800 xt. My concern with THAT though is if it'd be wise to get that generation of card, if it'll hold up for much longer.

One thing I've been trying to find but can't seem to locate anywhere is a chronological listing of all of ati's card releases, so I can get a rough estimate of where I am in terms of technology on my video card, isn't the 9600 better than the 9700 or some such thing? I know they jumped around a bit there.

Anything you guys can offer on the matter is greatly appreciated, thanks =)

There's no point in upgrading your card right now unless you shoot for the highest tiers. A 9700 Pro should run HL² just fine.

Really, whats the point of upgrading an already decent system? I woul wait until at least 4ghz 64 bit processors, and probably close to 5ghz before upgrading.

Hehe, wow, you guys put that much faith in my system? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yeah seriously, don't waste your money.

Wouldn't you rather play HL2 just fine now and then buy that expensive card you have your eye on for much less later?

Seriously...it will run awesome on your system. It runs terrific for me on Mid-High settings and aside from my video card my comp kinda blows:

Some Crappy Mobo w/ AGP 4X
    AMD AthlonXP 2200+ (1.7 ghz??)
    512 RAM
    ASUS 9800XT

It's fine HL2 will run okay on that system.

Although if you have money to burn I'd upgrade the video card to the new GeForce 6800 Ultra Extreme or Radeon X800 XT-Platinum Edition.
