I have a problem with my computer. When i play games i get this hitching in Games. Like my fps drops ever so slightly when i enter new areas or when sound occurs. It even occurs on games off the HL engine and newer games. It gets really annoying due to everytime i see an enemy it freezes up for a split second. Or when a new sprite enters the game it freezes up.
This didn't occur on my 5600 but on my 9800 Pro it happens in every game and is really annoying.

System Specs
AMD 3000+
Sapphire 9800 Pro
1 gig of pc 3200 ram
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe Mobo

Please help me guys.

Sounds like a problem with your hardrive. Have you defragged lately?

Not the video card, i have the same exact brand and its been perfect over the past 6 months. Try checking for spyware and check for viruses, they could be eating up your system speed.

I'd suggest downloading and running Memtest or DocMem. I've got a failing hard drive, and it doesn't cause hitches as you're describing... just long load times and transition points, with an occasional five or ten-second 'hiccup' when a model or texture that wasn't preloaded is first seen.

Alternately, I'd recommend disabling 'TwinBank' if it's on, given that I see that mobo is using an nFarce chipset. I've had to service machines where the TwinBank BS ended up frying the RAM, as it essentially overclocks it.

Beyond that, check you active process table and kill off anything that shouldn't be running. A friend had an Alienware, and it had the 'alien autopsy' software running, which stole focus (including, annoyingly enough, from fullscreen games) and caused short 'hangs' every now and again, because it was throwing errors.

if your OCed clock it down, does it do it on other moniters? maybe your moniter is running a refresh it shouldn't

edit: is it only when playing online? or offline aswell? have you tried direct3d or opengl?

It's in the BIOS. Somewhere in the RAM options. I've seen what their shoddy workmanship can do to a system... so I go with VIA chipsets, personally. They might have their own quirks, but I've never seen a VIA board reduce a DIMM to carbon-scored toast.

    Roger

I also have a VIA chipset, and it doesn't fry RAM, thank god, just as long as you put the correct type in it xD

kupe, if there isn't a memory overclocking option, go into your memory options in your BIOS, and look at the clock settings...

Is it at a higher value then it should be? And who manufactured your RAM?

I have no clue how to get into my bios.

would it just be easier to reformat?
  • SalamanSalaman Join Date: 2002-11-23 Member: 9711Members
If your problem is a bios setting, then reformatting won't fix it.

To access the bios, you have to hold the delete key down as the computer is booting up

However some mobo manufacturers deviate from the standard, and so you might have to hold another button down, it should say which one as the computer boots up.

I had the same thing with Norton AntiVirus. If you've got it installed, try disabling it before playing. Helped me alot <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

    You got a 128meg card or a 256meg card?

I had that problem with Doom3, just reduce the texture quality a little and it should sort it.

    Hope that helps.

Normally you get to it by pressing delete at the post screen just after you turn your pc on.
