<div class="IPBDescription">First model</div> Yo,
I'm part of a team who's going to make a mod for HL2, and I'm sorta learning how to make models, this is my first model. Any constructive critisism is apreciated and welcome. I don't think this model will be made into a NS model, unless on high demand.

    you should model the mag/clip as a seperate thing rather than part of the gun itself <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Also needs to be thinner than the gun so it can fit in w/o clipping into the model (where the model runs through another part of a model, looks ugly when you animate <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

    Yeah, I screwed up the bottom part (trigger area and clip) completly and I'm re-doing it. The highest cylinder poly count is 50, bit high to use in HL1, but would be ok for HL2. Oh and it only looks so high because of the way it's rendered, for example: the gun grip looks really high poly, but if you look close it's only about 10 <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I spose I could redo all the cylinders making them a lower poly so it could be used in NS too....... If on high demand though <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I have no idea how to skin or do animations for it yet anyway, but I've got a few good tutorials on how to. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Anyways, please, more feedback and if you want it in NS...

    it's not bad for a first model, but i'd suggest redoing the whole thing from scratch once you're don. Why? because most first models arent very accurate. As yours isn't. Don't get me wrong i like it so far, it's much better than my first model, but i see some problems. The handle for one, is too blocky, it doesnt look like something you'd like to hold. The front grip, looks like an mp5 front grip, but that's not really the way they are:

    <img src='http://www.maumee.org/residential/mpdw/mp5-1.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    see? it slopes down to the lower part, as well it still slants like the other grips. It's not all perfectly round, or in two parts. So it's close, but it could be better.

    I'd lower the cylinder poly counts they're wasteful, nothing should go over 10 sides, maybe 12 if you want, but nothing more. Clip thing already stated. and i'd look at making more detail in the body itself (what you have of it at least) add groves, releaf's you know, definition.

    i do like what you've done though, and i think you're going to be great at modelling if you keep at it.

    Thanks dude,

    I rekon I need to start again too, but I'm sorta thinkin of makin a p90 instead of the mp5, mp5's come up to often during games and it's time for something new <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Also, I'm using Milkshape to make the model, do you suggest I use 3dsmax instead? I've had a go at it, but there's so many tools it just gets confusing... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    by no means. I use ms3d exclusively, and it comes out great in my humble opinion. Finish this model first, just to improve your skills.

    and model what you wish <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> just keep up the good work. If you need any MS3d help, pm me i know it well.

    Even if it is for Hl2 the less poly you use the better

    Make sure you're cylinders dont have that many sides because that is just a waste because once it is smoothed and skined you cant tell the difference b/w 18 sides and 8-12

    Yeh,
    I'm not sure how to do that..... I've tried joining it up and everything, but it always looks wrong, would you just create a heck load of vertexes and then put in the faces or......how?

    Anyways, heres an update:
    As you can see, im starting to add some detail. It's kinda hard to see it cos it was a quick render, but you get the idea <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Ok, the mp5 has been finished!!! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->:D:D (Ill put a screenie up tonight)

    Anyways we need ideas for guns to be used, it has been decided that the mp5 is for the AI, not the player, becuase it's over used. The p90 will be for the player, but we need more ideas! Both pistol and normal gun thingy!

    If your in milkshape 3d, goto the model statistics button on one of the dropdown boxes with all the plugins. Triangles = polys

    Most computers can handle around 6000 polys, but everyone will throw a fit if its over 3000, so its good to keep it around there.

    Dude,
    Like this is my first ever model. It's kinda expected that it's sloppy and will have to many poly's. I didnt know that a cylinder should have about 15 poly's max untill I had already made it. I have stated that I'm going to remake the model.

    when you've pretty much mastered primitives modelling, be sure to learn poly-by-poly modelling too, its a very powerful method of modelling :D
