Custom Icons: How To Make?

<div class="IPBDescription">Problems with PS 7.0</div> I am having trouble viewing and creating custom icons with my Photoshop 7.0.
Just did a clean install so that's not the issue - it's a setting somewhere.
When I open a tga for say, a custom icon (640_hive.tga in this case) it doesn't display correctly.
First off, it shows no colors. Instead of a locked background layer with a colored hive, mine shows a transparent outline of a hive labeled Layer 0. In the channels box there is no Alpha 1 channel as there should be. Before you say my tga is borked, know that I sent it to a friend who opened it and it displayed normally (he sent me a screenie).
Does anyone have a clue as to why my PS isnt displaying tga's normally?
Please respond only if you're knowledgeable regarding Photoshop.
