Drop an ammo pack where the hives are suppose to be. I believe non-existant hives, the ammo pack will spawn on the ground. If a hive is there, the ammo pack will spawn on top of the hive and sink through it.

Send in a basic marine and listen for whining/crying/yelling over voicecomm.

Listening for skulks running will usually tell you where the hive is. Or you can listen for late jointers spawning in.

The preferred method was to listen for the res-collection noise of the rt, but that is now removed.

The ammo pack method is my method of choice too, however if you're fast you can just work it out from the position of the players.

BEST way is when someone with a "." in their name joins, and you see the following message as he spawns:

".n00b (Power Silo): Hi"

Actually, the one thing that I do is I just sit above a hive or two until someone asks me for something after I've dropped the required IP, armory, and TF. lol of course, that makes me none too popular, though I do win games quickly...usually...

i believe that dropping ammo and med on hives is ****
so i prefer listening for the spawn.

i wonder what was censored.

but yeah the best way is to drop an ammo pack, because theres a high chance that the skulks will have moved out of the room by the time youve got in the chair and dropped an ip and armory. time is money, try not to waste it by desperately trying to figure out the hive by listening to the pitterpatter in the corridors. the ammo trick takes 3 res and max 3 seconds.

More like 2 res. No need to drop on the 3rd suspected hive due to process of elimination

Or, since you really need to build an observatory pretty early on, you could just scan...as someone pointed out already.

There is a 2/3 chance you might miss and even then, your left with a 50/50 chance of which hive it is. Though you can scan a hive area and come with 3 outcomes:

1) It's the hive, CONGRATS, it's your lucky day!

2) It's not a hive, now drop an rt in another hive location. If you can't it's the hive. If you can, tell the marines to rush that hive area.

I believe it's best if you scan the MIDDLE hive location as if you lock it down, you have a good chance of winning. If it's their hive, lock down a side hive that's easiest to defend or has more res.

Well considering there are only 3 hives per map, last time i checked that is, if you hit two out of three hives with scan and get nothing, you SHOULD know where the hive is without doing anything else. You can't really lose in that situation.
