I can see my apartment... FROM SPACE!!!
CLICK CLICK CLICK

This program, though a pain in the arse to learn how to use, is absolutely OMG AWESOME.

Its a 3d mapping of Earth, w/ several terabytes worth of 2048x2048 (or HIGHER) res pics for practically every square inch of the earth.

You start out in space, mouse wheel zooms in, I can zoom in all the way to my apartment. :O

Its nowhere near 'instant', as it has to take quite awhile to download the photos from NASA"s database, but OMG is it cool to see a full color pic of your residence that was taken from space...

There's a 4 pixel blur that I think is my car! :D

I'm in the process of taking a 'zoom in' series of shots which I will post in a bit.

I've used a similar website to map the area around my house. Its a bit of a pain to do, but the results are nice. You can pay a couple of pounds for a week's access to the really high res images.

Keyhole is similar to this. Probably a little more user friendly to use, from the way you describe this program. It also has newer data, as keyhole's database is used for places with professional application of satellite imagery. Of course, Keyhole wants your cash, but the brief demo product is fun to look around in. And honestly, since all anyone wants to do is see their house and some neat landmarks, all you need is a short trial period anyway.

Somehow I doubt it's your car, being as it has a 15m per pixel resoultion.

...I thought the best we had was 2m per pixel...but whatever.

Then you also need to remember it's all from a global scan of the earth over 4 years (...1997-2000(1?)) or so. So...if your house is new it might not even be in there. If you want a real picture of your house from space you can ask a company to use its satellite and pay them $150 or whatever it costs.

In my case, the photo is within 6 months old because there's a patch of dirt next to a grocery store that just recently opened as a resturant. But 6 months ago it was grassy... Due to the emptiness of the campus parking lot, I'd wager its sometime during June-July.

For some of you who find old images or undetailed images the way it works is this:

There have been multiple satellite mapping surveys conducted since the 1970's The data recovered from these missions is fed into a database along with its coordinates. Now, All the data that has been collected is entered in this database (except for a few alterations of classified locations)

The trick is: Some of the more interesting areas get passed during every survey and thus tend to be much more detailed. The latest satellite feeds are the ones that give you the 1pixel=1 meter resolutions. However some of the areas only were picked up in the earlier passes during the 70's and 80's. The satellites back then were not as advanced. While you can still see some cool images the detail is greatly reduced.

The closer you live to a metropolitan area, or other area of interest the greater the chances of seeing a detailed image.

This software looks like it was based upon the 'keyhole' project that was started about 5-6 years ago. I am glad we are finally seeing a public version of it. Its fun stuff.

Using that Keyhole program a year ago I actually found myself outside my house. Well, I found my tent from that summer anyways but it was pretty easy to spot since I live in the middle of nowhere.

This stuff would be way better if their server wasnt as crappy. You can use the USGS maps, but they work only for the US, and they are not really that good. The animated Earth features (hurricanes, colorado fires and so on) might be really cool if it wouldn't take 5 hours each to load.

Oh, and they won't do Cuba. Guess why.
(This is the process where it scans the areas surrounded by the Red Rectangle and applies the more detailed textures to it. It's the only thing that works, it uses the local database to increase the details, and it works for the US and surrounding areas only.)

How long until someone puts an NS commander view over the pic of DooMs house?

Or better yet, how long before someone gives a hilarious name to each location on DooM's close up, a la DooM/Quake mission screen?

I can't get this to work at all. No matter where I try and zoom in, there's always a problem trying to connect to the server.
