I'll chip in with another thumbs up for AVG. And spybot S&D. Also adaware, and CWShredder is always handy to have (can't be bothered to find link though). It's something designed specifcally for the coolwebsearch string of... spyware/malware or whatever it is. it's gotten rid of it more times than spybot or adaware for me, at least. But it's not really needed if you use Firefox.
Just sneaking in another thumbs up for AVG. I currently use AVG and Spybot Serach & Destroy to clean out the nasties, and have ZoneAlarm running to keep em out. Good stuff. Still too stubborn to switch to SP2 and use it's firewall. =p

For quick and dirty virus removal, try housecall.trendmicro.com. It's not a terribly fancy virus scanner, but it finds all the little bugs that even full versions of Norton AV tend to overlook. We use it all the time at the PC shop I work in. It's convenient, because it's online and doesn't require the install of anything more than a browser plugin. They keep it pretty well updated, too.
AVG caused alot of problems for me and ended in a format but some swear by it. If you want no bloatware and no downloading, google Housecall. its great.
<a href='http://housecall.trendmicro.com/' target='_blank'>HouseCall</a> doesn't like to run in opera. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> But it does work in IE. And if by any chance you have Road Runner, they provide ETrust Antivirus.
Sadly housecall is IE only compatable. So you can say I do use iexplore. To run virus scans, other than that its firefox <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I tried Trend Micro's online scan once, was a bugger to get it up and running. Maybe because I had Opera at the time...

AVG sucks, I ran AVG about a billion times, up-to-date, and found no reason why my computer was being a piece of crap. Ran housecall and avast! and both found like 10 malware items neither AVG nor SBS&D or adaware found.

Uh, wow. I'm trying to uninstall AVG and use another program, but there IS NO UNINSTALL. Wtg? I tried add/remove programs, failed. Tried deleting the whole folder, and I cannot. HOW DO I UNINSTALL IT?

Since virus/malware writers tend to want to avoid detection, its very common to have viruses/malware that are detected with some programs and not by others.
On another note, one program that I seem to hear about is "Pest Patrol". It's not free, so I'm quite sure how good it is though.

It just runs this: "C:\Program Files\AVG6\SETUP.EXE" /UNINSTALL
So if the shortcut isn't there, just do that yourself from start -> run, with the correct path to the setup.exe of course.
