<div class="IPBDescription">=(</div> I haven't been able to play even the first level of the orignal Half-Life single player because of this error.

SV_StartVolume = 510

I get this fatal error right when I touch my HEV suit in the first level... numerous reinstalls haven't helped...

Go into the sound options and lower the suit volume slider.
