I wrote a little birthday blog entry. Here it is. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> 16, 18, 21, driving, smoking, drinking ? the milestones we mark our development with are mostly legal, and mostly destructive. Some of us still have traditional cultural markers: bar mitzvahs, first communion. Many roll their own, through drunken binges or trips to the DMV. 250 years ago around these parts, we would all have individually jumped naked into an icy stream in the deep cold of winter, flailed around, and surfaced holding the good luck charm we would keep for the rest of our lives. Everyone these days accepts birthdays as our lines of demarcation. This leads to the inevitable question, "Well how does it feel to be age X?" We grow up in leaps and spurts sometimes, but it's rarely on our birthdays.
When I was younger, my birthdays and friends' birthdays were marked by outings: Kings Island, The Renaissance festival. The normal course of life stops, and you do something different for a while. These days that doesn't happen as much. Birthdays are the same as other days, nicer, sunnier, and with more cake perhaps, but life doesn't stop anymore. Birthdays are artificial. They are just ordinary days, among many ordinary days. But we choose our birthdays as times to reflect a bit, look around at our everyday lives, and celebrate them. We can mark out our lives with many things: years, ocations, realizations, roles, but when we are being most exact, we mark them with people.
So today, 21 years after I came into the world with a fresh glistening mat of red hair, I'm going about my business as usual, with a little better food and a little more cake. And I'll be celebrating all the people that have shared some percentage of these years with me, as the real markers of where I've come from, and where I hope to go.
Thank you all, I love all of you, godspeed, and good luck. :o) <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
