need a cheap one
i have a friend who is buying a laptop and he needs one which is small, can play a lil music, surf the internet, do word documents, and burn cds, MAYBE watch dvds and has preferably built in wireless network capability so he can surf the internet from hotzones at the local college where they have wifi set up. nothing fancy just a good generic laptop (no games will be played)

price below 1000 dollars, saw a emachine (yeah yeah i know, for 940 but no wifi at best buy)

They are running off integrated graphics.

You can get a cheapo 9200 mobility in there somewhere. Let me check...

    http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc....-147-068&DEPA=3

Eh, Radeon 9000. It'll still work.

Integrated graphics works fine if you aren't playing games. Then again, the newegg one is cheaper than the pctorque one.

That's a pretty good one, actually. My old laptop had an MR9000 and I could run Far Cry on it. Everything had to be set to low, but still...

Try to get a bigger HD with that laptop though.

For what he is going to use it for, a mac would be very nice. They're sleek and they don't use Windows... That's a plus.

Not everyone wants to learn a completely new OS. Would be nice, but it's reality....

What's wrong with WinDonuim? () I've never had a problem with it and it runs very well on my laptop.

It's not like OS X is Linux (BSD is close...)

It's no harder than clicking on the apple in the upper left hand corner instead of the word start in the lower left.

Yea, well, I've only had a mac crash on me a few times, unlike windows where I can't even click a mouse (exhageration...) without a BSoD popping up.

I've never had WinXP give me a blue screen of death - even though I've owned two laptops and my parent's home PC - in a year's worth of use.

Yea, and? I've used macs since OS 7, Windows since 3.1, I've had far more crashes in Windows.

    I'd still rather use linux

I've never gotten a BSoD with WinXP. If it's not for gaming integrated graphics are fine. Good luck getting a WiFi one under $1000 though.

    Lucky sonofa.....

For those who aren't in the "laptop in-crowd" Dell somehow managed to get first-release rights on the Mobility Radeon 9800 - the fastest mobile GPU on the market. It pwns the ponce off of anything else by a fairly hefty margin.
