im a lil confused
PCI express has me a lil confused. I am wondering what is PCI-EX x16 and PCI-EX x1. what kind of cards can you put in them. Can you put in regular PCI cards from traditional motherboards? What is the speed increase in PCI-EX?

I believe only video cards can be put in PCI-E 16x slots, while PCI-E 1x are used for all of the devices that are put into PCI slots now, like sound cards, modem cards, ect.

And no, you can only use PCI-E cards in PCI-E slots, old PCI cards won't fit.

Weren't they claiming that it's still backwards compatible?

Well This is the Layout of the high-end Socket 775 Intel Board, since AMD chipsets with PCI-x will only come out this fall.

Well as far as I can see there will be no backward compatability from PCI to PCI-x 1x, but of course it comes with a few regular PCI slots.

And PCI-x 16x is obviously the graphics port.

PCIe and PCI-X are totally different things. PCIe is backwards compatable on boards that support PCI bridging and PCIe. Intel has one board that does that if I remember correctly, and currently AMD has none (Tyan boards use PCI-X not PCIe). PCI-X is just a data transfer increase on existing PCI technology, but it has the same organization and design as PCI slots so it really doesn't do too much more (at most it has just over twice the total transfer rate of standard PCI IIRC).

PCIe is a total reorganization of the transfer system of existing PCI slots using new advances in micro technology. PCIe x1 (stands for one data link, don't worry about the terms, their PCIe slang) is capable of 2.5Gbps transfer speeds and the highest and it is possible to include as many as 32 data links in a PCIe port. In theory, this is so much data transfer that video cards quite concevably could run several times more efficainatly then current day cards using absoulty no embedded RAM at all, there is so much transfer bandwidth that the whole cached information could be transfered all in one shot.

If you want to know more about how PCIe gets its insane tranfer bandwidth read the article posted by spinviper (linked by dragon_mech). Otherwize a good summery is...

PCIe != PCI-X
PCIe > PCI-X
PCIe = backward compatable PCI, PCI-X !=
PCIe = OMGBBQ COOL
PCI-X = wow neat
PCI = old crap

[edit] according to my best sourses, the PCIe slots are indeed backwards compatable on the alien ware SLI board. You either do all the PCI slots as PCIe or none of the PCI slots as PCIe, the two systems both take enough mobo room that it wouldn't be worth sticking them both on a board.

What the hell are you talking about? No one said anything about something being broken.
